Job Summary:

The Toronto District School Board is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Human Rights Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our Human Rights Office, you will be responsible for providing intake/triaging services, facilitating early resolution of human rights complaints, and supporting projects, outreach, and research initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Screen, review, and triage incoming complaints, concerns, and requests: Conduct initial assessments to determine completeness, severity, urgency of reported cases and jurisdiction.
  • Facilitate the early resolution of human rights complaints: Conduct mediations and restorative practices to resolve complaints in a fair and timely manner.
  • Support special projects and systemic initiatives: Provide research and analysis to inform the development of policies and procedures related to human rights.
  • Develop and implement outreach/engagement initiatives: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to increase awareness and understanding of TDSB human rights policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records: Manage electronic records effectively and provide reports on HRO activities and statistical data.

Qualifications:

  • University degree in a related field: Human rights, law, social sciences, or a related field.
  • Three years of related experience: Intake/triaging services and human rights complaint resolution in a large unionized public sector environment.
  • Certification and/or formal training: Mediation, human rights, and workplace investigation processes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills: Ability to handle sensitive information with good judgment, empathy, and discretion.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills: Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and make sound decisions.

Special Requirements:

  • Occasional travel: Travel to other TDSB locations as required.
