About Our Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Winter Supervisor of Maintenance to join our team at the Government of Nova Scotia. As a key member of our Highway Operations Division, you will be responsible for supervising snow and ice control activities, ensuring the effective use of equipment and resources, and providing direction and technical support to our team.

Primary Accountabilities

You will be responsible for:

  • Providing direction and technical support to the team
  • Supervising snow and ice control activities
  • Assisting in the planning and coordination of routes, staffing, equipment assignments, and repair
  • Overseeing work on job sites
  • Ensuring stocks of road salt and traction sand are replenished daily
  • Conducting preliminary site investigations, preparing cost estimates, and inspecting maintenance contracts
Qualifications and Experience

The successful applicant will have:

  • High School and 4 years of related experience (2 of the 4 years must be in snow and ice control services)
  • A Civil Engineering Technology Diploma plus 2 years of experience in snow and ice control services
  • An acceptable equivalent of education, training, and experience

You will have successfully supervised a team to achieve operational requirements, gained their trust and respect, and maintained a professional and courteous disposition. Experience in a unionized environment and working with time reporting systems and/or work order generation would be considered assets.

We offer a competitive salary range of $2,277.39 - $2,350.02 bi-weekly and a wide range of benefits, including a Defined Benefit Pension Plan, Health, Dental, Life Insurance, General illness, Short and Long Term Disability, Vacation, and Employee and Family Assistance Programs.

Working Conditions

These positions may be subject to shift work and frequent travel. You will regularly work in excess of scheduled hours and on weekends, often during extreme winter weather conditions. You may be required to be on 24-hour call during snow and ice control season.

Additional Information

These opportunities are for 17 weeks with an anticipated employment period of December 1, 2024 - March 29, 2025. Please note that successful applicants who are current CUPE regular employees will be appointed as Term employees under the NSGEU Collective Agreement to maintain group benefit entitlements as provided under the CUPE Collective Agreement.
