Position Overview

The Executive Leader for Student Experience plays a pivotal role within the Vice-President, Students Leadership Team, overseeing the strategic vision and management of various units and initiatives aimed at enhancing student engagement and experience at UBC's Vancouver campus. This position is tasked with providing high-level leadership to ensure that student experiences align with the broader UBC Student Strategic Plan and other key student priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and articulate a comprehensive vision for the Student Affairs units, including the Centre for Accessibility, Centre for Community Engaged Learning, and the Sexual Violence and Prevention Office, ensuring these units are recognized as leaders in their fields.
  • Promote principles of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion throughout all Student Affairs programs, ensuring an accessible and welcoming environment for all students.
  • Identify and address barriers to student inclusion, implementing effective solutions to enhance the overall student experience.
  • Align the objectives of Student Affairs with UBC's strategic frameworks, ensuring that all initiatives support the university's commitments to access and inclusion.
  • Provide administrative and educational leadership to develop program objectives, including performance and financial goals, while coordinating the annual action plan for Student Affairs.
  • Foster relationships with student governance bodies and other key campus partners to uphold UBC's values and community standards.
  • Act as an ambassador for the student body, ensuring that Student Affairs is a trusted resource for student information and support.
  • Influence and engage university leaders and stakeholders to champion Student Affairs initiatives across the institution.
  • Collaborate with unit directors to cultivate a respectful workplace culture that values diversity and inclusivity.
  • Lead a team in evaluating program effectiveness and ensuring alignment with broader strategic goals.
  • Identify opportunities for innovative programs based on demographic insights and community needs.
  • Oversee the development of professional development strategies to empower and engage staff within Student Affairs.
  • Ensure that student leadership opportunities are maximized and contribute to meaningful learning experiences.
  • Manage the annual and long-term budgets for Student Affairs, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities.
  • Advocate for the needs of diverse student populations, ensuring that support processes are responsive and effective.
  • Recruit, mentor, and evaluate unit directors, providing guidance and support for their professional growth.
  • Represent the Vice-President, Students portfolio on various university committees related to student engagement.
  • Encourage innovative practices within the Student Affairs division, informed by current research and evidence-based strategies.

Qualifications

A Master's degree in a relevant field is required, with a Ph.D. preferred. Candidates should possess a minimum of 12 years of progressive leadership experience, ideally within an academic environment. A commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is essential, along with outstanding communication skills and the ability to navigate complex stakeholder relationships.
