About the Opportunity

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Program Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our harm reduction team, you will work closely with internal and external partners to coordinate initiatives that promote health, reduce stigma, and protect and promote health.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in health promotion, harm reduction, and community development, with a proven track record of synthesizing data and evidence to inform policy and program development. You will be responsible for providing expert-level advice and guidance on harm reduction, stigma reduction, and trauma-informed work, as well as coordinating projects and initiatives with internal and external partners.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Providing expert-level advice and guidance on harm reduction, stigma reduction, and trauma-informed work
  • Coordinating projects and initiatives with internal and external partners
  • Contributing to knowledge translation by retrieving, assessing, and synthesizing complex research findings
  • Developing policies and programs aimed at empowering marginalized populations and reducing stigma
  • Collaborating with key stakeholders to develop tools, indicators, and measures to enable an understanding of health protection and healthy communities work

About You

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced professional who has:

  • A Bachelor's degree in health promotion, sociology, or a related field, with 5 years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree in public health, health promotion, or a related field, with 3 years of relevant experience
  • Strong knowledge and experience in working with stigmatized populations and individuals who have experienced trauma
  • Excellent facilitation and communication skills
  • Strong understanding of harm reduction principles and practices
  • Experience in media advocacy and communication
  • Knowledge of oppression and stigma as a social determinant of health, and awareness of one's own power and privilege
  • Experience in evidence-informed decision-making, conducting rapid evidence reviews, and producing evidence briefs
  • Strong understanding of innovative systems thinking, community-based organizations, and community development
  • Knowledge of the realities of poverty, class, racism, social isolation, past trauma, gender-based discrimination, and other social inequalities that affect both people's vulnerability and capacity for effectively dealing with drug-related harm
  • Experience in interacting with municipal units, communities, and community leadership within zones
  • Strong understanding of working in coalitions and building strategic partnerships
  • Experience in community development and mobilization
  • Strong project management skills and experience

Hours
  • Permanent full-time position; 75 hours biweekly
Compensation and Incentives

$39.23 - $45.79 hourly
