At YWCA Metro Vancouver, we are dedicated to the principles of Truth and Reconciliation. This commitment involves recognizing, acknowledging, and addressing our role in historical and ongoing colonial practices; enhancing cultural safety for Indigenous participants, volunteers, and staff; fostering deeper connections with host First Nations; and advocating for justice and equity alongside Indigenous women, girls, and Two Spirit individuals. We aim to integrate Indigenous knowledge, culture, and values into all YWCA programs and services.

To further these commitments, we are looking for a Specialist to collaborate with the Associate Director of Indigenous Initiatives and Engagement. In this position, you will assist in executing initiatives that encompass advocacy, relationship building, and program and organizational development.

Key Responsibilities

Relationship Building and Outreach

  • Establish and nurture meaningful, trust-based relationships with Indigenous organizations and communities.
  • Collaborate across the organization to implement the Indigenous partnership strategy and support community engagement initiatives as needed.
  • Participate in the YWCA's Truth and Reconciliation Committee.

Advocacy Support

  • Monitor local, provincial, and federal issues relevant to the YWCA and Indigenous communities, supporting necessary responses or actions.
  • Coordinate outreach and communications with host First Nations as part of a team.
  • Keep track of communications for follow-up when necessary.

Program Development and Evaluation

  • Collaborate to establish key priorities that support truth and reconciliation.
  • Assist in implementing innovative methods to measure outcomes across programs.
  • Support learning and capacity building efforts to advance Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Facilitate community listening and research to inform initiatives.

Coordination and Administration

  • Work in partnership with program and fund development teams to assist with applications for new projects and respond to funding opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the marketing communications team to create awareness and public education campaigns that support Truth and Reconciliation and advocate for equity and justice for Indigenous women, girls, and Two Spirit individuals.
  • Assist in organizing events that promote Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Support the Associate Director of Indigenous Initiatives and Engagement with administrative tasks, including report writing, tracking expenditures, and drafting communications.
  • Participate in special projects as required.

Qualifications

  • Lived experience as an Indigenous person.
  • 1-3 years of experience in a similar role or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience in engaging and building relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, and First Nations.
  • A commitment to working collaboratively to effect change in systems, organizational structures, policies, practices, and attitudes.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse range of individuals.
  • Project coordination experience is an asset.
  • Strong administrative skills with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • A valid clear criminal record check is required.
  • Compliance with YWCA Metro Vancouver's COVID-19 vaccination policy may be necessary in the future.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive extended medical and dental benefits.
  • A defined benefit pension plan.
  • Flexible working arrangements for eligible positions.
  • Employee Family Assistance Program, providing confidential support services for employees and their families.
  • Complimentary staff membership to our Health + Fitness Centre, discounts at our YWCA Hotel, and priority access to YWCA Child Care centres.
  • Pay Rate: $34.40 per hour
  • A workplace that prioritizes employee health, safety, and wellbeing, offering numerous learning and growth opportunities, including a staff mentorship program and three equity committees focused on achieving meaningful equity and inclusion.
  • Pro-rated, paid vacation of 22 days per annum, accrued monthly in accordance with YWCA's leave regulations.
