Role Overview

The Associate Financial Planner (AFP) is designed to offer a pathway for team members to enhance their expertise, facilitate training, and pursue education towards becoming a Financial Planner. This position is responsible for assisting Financial Planners (FP) in managing existing client portfolios, cultivating new business opportunities, and optimizing productivity through both sales and administrative support. Collaborating closely with the Financial Planner, this role aims to strengthen client relationships and gradually develop business sources while aiding in the daily operations of the partnering Financial Planner. The focus is on maximizing business potential by providing an exceptional and unexpected experience for members through robust relationship-building. The Associate Financial Planner may also engage in community networking outside of regular hours to create business opportunities. This role will work alongside the FP to ensure every opportunity is utilized to assist members in managing, saving, growing, protecting, and enhancing their financial well-being, thereby contributing to Coast Capital's overall profitability. High-quality service will be provided while effectively collaborating with other teams within the branch network to meet sales, growth, and retention objectives, and taking responsibility for portfolio management and member experience in the absence of the Financial Planner. This includes identifying and referring complex investment needs, personal insurance, small business requirements, or mobile needs to the appropriate specialized channels. A solid understanding of the industry and sound business judgment are essential to fulfill all responsibilities, including insurance and investment referrals that benefit our members. This role offers practical training and the chance to deepen financial planning knowledge while working in a professional and dynamic environment managing lower-tier members from the FP's portfolio. A PFP and CFP designation is required.

Key Responsibilities

Manage daily administrative tasks, including serving as the primary liaison for member estate and marital dissolution matters; handling FP communications and emails; ordering supplies and business cards; and assisting in the development and upkeep of member files while proactively identifying follow-up opportunities for the FP. Collaborate with the FP to effectively implement marketing and business development initiatives. Support the FP in scheduling and executing contact management requirements, including booking and confirming appointments and ensuring members are prepared for meetings. Prepare necessary documentation for account openings, trades, financial planning, and maintenance as required by the FP, including gathering required information from members. Address the financial needs of members when the FP is unavailable, including executing trades as directed by the FP or existing planning documentation. Work with the FP and branch leadership on special projects, providing support for local and organizational initiatives and assisting with technology service and system maintenance as needed. Understand and support Coast's vision, values, and mission, recognizing how this role contributes to leading member relationships. Lead by example and share knowledge with colleagues. Participate in team and community activities to support local and corporate initiatives. Ensure compliance with all operational, risk, and compliance processes in collaboration with the FP. Adhere to compliance standards in all interactions. Process transactions to direct assets into appropriate financial products based on client risk/reward tolerances and documented planning steps as directed by the FP. Identify business opportunities for member appointments and refer to internal partners based on member needs in collaboration with the FP. Deliver superior member service by demonstrating professionalism and helpfulness at all times. Promptly resolve customer issues and concerns. Actively engage with the FP and branch team to support the achievement of business goals. Proactively build opportunities for the FP to optimize during member meetings. Administer and support a portfolio generating significant revenue and holding substantial investment assets. Responsible for mutual fund sales for smaller balance accounts as necessary, demonstrating the ability to complete a Personal Guide and Investment Guide effectively. Enhance share of wallet by identifying and acting on non-investment products and services, insurance, and referring to partners when applicable. Ensure timely and accurate responses to client requests, maintaining and building positive member relationships. Foster relationships that contribute to team success while also being capable of working independently when required.

Ideal Candidate Profile

4 – 6 years of relevant experience. Direct experience in an investment capacity with portfolios and regulatory requirements for a minimum of 3 years. Required to hold an IFIC and/or QAFP License; PFP and/or CFP required for those aspiring to become Financial Planners. Proficient in E-mail, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with an aptitude for learning new technologies and systems. Secondary language skills (e.g., Cantonese, Mandarin, Farsi, Punjabi, or Korean) are considered an asset but not essential. Familiarity with various quotation equipment and software, including word processing and spreadsheet applications. Strong understanding of investment portfolios, regulatory suitability, and current market activities. While not the lead advisor, demonstrate sound judgment when assisting members in the absence of the Financial Planner. Business Acumen: Understands business operations, strategies, practices, trends, and technology; recognizes the competitive landscape and how strategies work in the marketplace. Collaboration: Ability to engage positively with colleagues at all levels, building constructive relationships. Communication: Effective in both oral and written communication, including presentations and concise summaries. Decision Making: Capable of making timely decisions based on analysis and judgment; sought after for advice.
