Reporting directly to the Environmental Superintendent (or their delegate), this position is primarily responsible for environmental monitoring programs and supporting site reporting requirements. A large majority of time spent in this position will be outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather conditions. The Environmental Guardian position is site-based and works a 14 days in, 14 days out rotation, 12 hours per day while at the site.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

- Environmental monitoring and documentation
- Laborer and manual tasks to support environmental tasks, for example, erosion control and water management
- Completing bi-weekly Tahltan Environmental Monitoring reports
- Weaving Tahltan Land Values into current monitoring programs
- Collection of vegetation, soils, and water quality samples
- Assisting scientific specialists in the collection of baseline and effects programs for terrestrial and aquatic field programs
- Entering collected field and laboratory data into the environmental database
- Assisting with spill prevention and spill response
- Other technical field and office tasks to support environmental development and site operations
- Collection of site surface and ground water samples
- Support the wildlife and amphibian monitoring programs
- Entering data into reports and spreadsheets
- All other duties as reasonably assigned

The Ideal Candidate

Education / Qualifications:

- 2-4 years of experience, preferably in a mining environment with experience in environmental monitoring and using off-road vehicles
- Computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), or at a basic level with a keen willingness to take further training
- Safety conscious, reliable, self-starter, and a team player
- Valid BC Class 5 N/L driver's license
- Good general physical health to perform rigorous outdoor activity
- Strong orienteering and wilderness experience to access environmental monitoring locations safely
- Strong data management, time management, and organizational skills with the ability to take clear, concise, and defensible field notes
- Experience in traditional ecological knowledge and/or archaeological studies is considered a strong asset
- Detail-oriented with excessive attention to detail
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Exhibits a high degree of responsibility for confidential matters
- Effective team player who can jump in wherever is needed
- Strong interpersonal and reasoning skills, with proven problem-solving abilities
- Highly self-motivated with the ability to work independently as well as with others

Work Location & Conditions

This is a site-based camp job at Eskay Creek Mine site. This position involves working at a remote mine site on a 15 days on/13 days off rotation.

The Eskay Creek Revitalization Project is located within the Coast Mountains of Northwestern British Columbia and Tahltan Territory. Ground transportation will be provided from local communities to the Eskay Creek Site facilities. For those applicants located elsewhere in western Canada, flight transportation from major urban centers will be provided to the Terrace or Smithers airports, from which shuttles will provide transportation to the Eskay Creek Camp facilities. Travel time and expenses are subject to Skeena's Travel Policy.

There will be exposure to extreme temperatures in all seasons, including working outdoors in snow, mud, ice, and water conditions, walking to and from different locations on uneven ground, prolonged periods of standing, and physically handling/lifting/moving heavy objects.

Compensation

The expected salary range for this position is CA$65,000 - CA$95,000, in line with the competitive job market for such roles carried out in British Columbia. Salary ranges are guidelines, and any job offer received by a candidate will be determined on a number of factors such as relevant education, training, and/or experience.
