Duties

- Planning, executing, supervising, documenting, and reporting required to deliver effective backcountry asset management and maintenance.

- Being directly responsible for human resources to meet objectives including but not limited to hiring, training, supervising, coordinating, as well as prevention and resolution of conflicts.

- Ensuring asset management requirements and deliverables are met including asset inspections, associated documentation, and record keeping.

- Ensuring operational priorities and reactive measures are implemented due to unforeseen requirements or direction from the LLYK Asset Manager.

- Managing budgets including procurement of goods and services more than $100k annually in accordance with Parks Canada financial delegation of authority and procurement practices.

This successful candidate for this position will be required to demonstrate exceptional organizational skills related to asset maintenance inspections, planning, monitoring, and record keeping. Throughout the selection process, candidates will be required to demonstrate these requirements to be considered for this position.

Intent of the process

The results of this process will be used to fill one temporary vacancy with high probability of permanent in the future, and may be used in the future to fill permanent or temporary vacancies that may arise at the GL MAN 07 C3 group and level, in the same, or other, areas within the Parks Canada Agency with full or part-time hours for various tenures, such as: Indeterminate, Term, Acting Assignment or Assignment at level, depending on status of the selected candidate.

Conditions of Employment

- Possession and maintenance of a valid class 5 driver’s license or provincial equivalent.

- Must undergo and pass pre-placement and periodic medical checks.

Operational Requirements

- Willingness to wear a Parks Canada uniform and personal protective equipment.

- Willingness to provide and wear appropriate footwear.

- Willingness to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays.

- Willingness to travel and work in the Lake Louise, Yoho & Kootenay Field Unit.

- Willingness to assist in forest fire suppression, including stand‑by and extra duty, if required.

EXPERIENCE

Recent and relevant* experience is required for the following:

- Hiring and supervising diverse teams, developing and implementing human resource plans, prevention and resolution of conflicts, as well as embedding staff development and training into all levels of operations.

- Managing budgets and controlled costs to ensure long‑term operational sustainability to achieve both organizational goals and mandatory requirements.

- Supervising construction, maintenance work, and goods and services procurement (contracted or directly managed using internal staff) with a focus on safety, quality, efficiency, and alignment with asset management principals.

- Using various software programs such as Microsoft Office, Outlook, and PDF editors.

Recent and relevant* experience is:

- A cumulative total of two years over the last five years of employment.

- Is directly applicable to the essential qualifications required for this position.

Applied / assessed at a later date

KNOWLEDGE

- Knowledge of the principles and best practices involved in constructing and maintaining hiking trails and backcountry campgrounds, including associated infrastructure, as well as the relevance of these assets with respect to long‑term sustainability, environmental impact, and visitor experience.

- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety regulations, and how to properly implement changes or update organizational policy and safety measures.

- Knowledge of administrative procedures and best practices related to periodic asset inspections.

ABILITIES

- Ability to anticipate, plan, and address needs for trail and backcountry infrastructure maintenance, ensuring all assets meet applicable code compliance, safety, and quality standards.

- Ability to analyze and prioritize problems in a variety of operational situations and develop and implement operational plans on short notice.

- Ability to supervise a team including mentoring, scheduling, training, and performance management.

- Ability to manage resources (time, human, financial, physical and information) to achieve planned goals.

ASSET OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATIONS

- Successful completion of the Wilderness First Aid course (minimum 40 hour). Other applicable First Aid courses will be considered as asset occupational certifications.

- Successful completion of a certified chainsaw course.

ASSET EXPERIENCE

- Experience supervising staff stationed in a backcountry or remote setting.

- Experience in planning, organizing and executing a multi‑day remote activity.

- Experience working directly with the use of helicopters including internal and external (sling) operations.

- Experience performing maintenance on backcountry trails, campgrounds, grounds assets, or other relevant similar infrastructure.

ASSET KNOWLEDGE

- Knowledge of the Lake Louise, Yoho and Kootenay Field Unit backcountry trails, campgrounds, bridges, and other applicable infrastructure.

- Knowledge of Parks Canada procurement practices (Goods, Services, and Construction).
