Role Description

This is not a corporate HR role buried in policies. This is a hands-on HR position where you handle everything from recruiting to onboarding to compliance. You’ll build simple, clean processes that keep hiring fast, paperwork accurate, and the team organized.

If you can’t manage multiple tasks at once or if you need constant supervision, this role won’t fit you.

Responsibilities

Recruitment & Hiring

Full-cycle recruiting for carpenters, laborers, subcontractors, and office roles.

Draft job postings, screen candidates, and schedule interviews.

Conduct reference checks and prepare offer letters.

Build proactive pipelines (trade schools, job boards, groups).

Onboarding & Documentation

Prepare employment contracts, onboarding checklists, and orientation materials.

Handle WSIB registration, safety documentation, and ID verification.

Ensure all certifications and training documents (e.g., WHMIS, Working at Heights) are up to date.

Maintain organized digital records for all employees and subcontractors.

HR Compliance & Policies

Maintain the employee handbook and update policies as laws change (Ontario employment standards).

Track attendance, vacation, overtime, and disciplinary notes.

Make sure the company is compliant with ESA, AODA, and health & safety requirements.

Coordinate with external advisors on any HR/legal issues.

Payroll Support & Admin

Coordinate payroll inputs: hours, overtime, vacation, and deductions.

Verify timesheets and get approvals from supervisors.

Work with the accountant/bookkeeper to ensure accurate payroll runs.

Maintain confidential employee data.

Employee Relations

Handle basic employee concerns and resolve issues early.

Support performance reviews and probation evaluations.

Manage terminations professionally and according to ESA rules.

Safety & Training Support

Maintain training logs, certifications, and expiry dates.

Ensure new hires receive safety orientation.

Support the safety coordinator or external consultant during inspections.

Qualifications

Must-have:

3–5 years of HR experience (construction or trades is a strong advantage).

Strong understanding of Ontario Employment Standards (ESA).

Experience hiring trades and field staff.

Solid organizational skills—you must keep documents and deadlines tight.

Good written communication—contracts, policies, and job posts.

Ability to work independently without constant direction.

Nice to have:

Experience with HR software or payroll systems.

Knowledge of WSIB, health & safety, and subcontractor onboarding.

CHRP/CHRL certification (not required).

Experience working with small construction companies.

Compensation

Salary: CAD 65,000–80,000 depending on experience.

Paid vacation + statutory holidays.

Optional performance-based bonuses.

Training & development budget.
