**Role**:
As a member of the Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS), the Science Communication Specialist reports to the Director of Science Advice, Reporting and Partnerships. Regular communications on the condition of the environment in Alberta and on environmental issues of relevance to the public are part of the legislated, operational and strategic commitments for the OCS.
The Science Communication Specialist is responsible for developing and facilitating environmental science communication. This includes timely delivery of best available scientific information to the public and to external stakeholders through a Strategic Communications Framework that contributes to building public trust and confidence in the scientific information from the OCS.
As a Science Communication Specialist you will:
- Support Alberta's Environmental Science Program (AESP) to provide credible public reporting on the condition of Alberta's environment
- Communicate scientific information to non-technical audiences
- Plan and coordinate environmental science events (e.g., Science Seminar Series, science workshops) for internal and external audiences
- Keep up-to-date on new technologies relevant to the science communication activities of the OCS and advise on and implement appropriate changes
- Support the Science Advisory Panel (SAP) and Indigenous Wisdom Advisory Panel (IWAP) Secretariat
- Support technical communication requirements for OCS projects related to Indigenous knowledge systems and participatory science (i.e., citizen science).
As a key role in the OCS, the Science Communication Specialist enables the GoA to meet its legislated mandate of enabling stakeholders, decision-makers and all Albertans to access best available science in support of making more informed and evidence-based environmental management decisions.

- University degree in environmental or natural sciences, science communications, science journalism or public relations. 2 years of related experience in research and science communication, knowledge mobilization, writing and editing principles, scientific concepts, and environmental issues.**Equivalency**:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education**Assets**:
- Exceptional writing and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge and understanding of the environmental legislation, particularly the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, and related regulations and policies.
- Technical knowledge of environmental science and monitoring programs in Alberta
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
- Experience with video production and editing.

**Salary**:
$2,588.06 to $3,397.76 bi-weekly. ($67,548 - $88,681 / year)
