**Position Summary**

The Manager, Communications is responsible for developing CPA's communication strategy and directly managing communications activities that promote, enhance and protect the organization's brand reputation.

The Manager, Communications is responsible for CPA's integrated communications products and services and, as an ambassador for the organization, will need to build relationships with volunteers, stakeholders and media.

As staff liaison, the Manager, Communications provides advice, assistance and information to the Research and Economics Committees, the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry (CJP), and the Junior Investigator Research Colloquium (JIRC). They also work collaboratively with the management team.

**Key Areas of Responsibility**

Strategy:

- Develops, implements and evaluates integrated strategic communication and marketing plans to advance CPA's brand identity; broadens awareness of its programs and priorities; and increases the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences.
- Develops and assists with implementing operational plans for strategic communications and advocacy objectives.
- Monitors the mental health policy and practice environment.
- Participates in the design and implementation of membership engagement strategies.
- Designs and implements marketing plans for CPA products and services, such as the Annual Conference.

Operations:

- Manages the development, distribution and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, electronic newsletters/alerts, social media, website, annual report to members, brochures, position papers/statements, etc.
- Manages website and social media—regularly posts new and consistent information (article links, stories, and events).
- Tracks and measures the level of engagement within the network over time.
- Serves as lead point person on media interactions that help promote the organization.
- Exercises judgment to prioritize media opportunities and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting material as needed.
- Actively engages, cultivates and manages press relationships to ensure coverage surrounding CPA's programs, events, public announcements and other activities.
- Plans, prepares and monitors budgets.

Operations by Channel:

- PsychEXPRESS (weekly e-alert), Resident Psych-e
- Plans and ensures the content of each issue reflects general policy directions approved by the CPA.
- Writes content and coordinates translation. Negotiates/sells advertising.
- Completes each issue's layout in French and English using the appropriate software package.
- Manages the electronic delivery of the newsletter.
- Website
- Responsible for content development, design and maximizing SEO (search engine optimization).
- Writes, posts, and updates copy according to current web usability and design best practices.
- Evaluate and recommend the website's design, structure and content to help ensure communications objectives are met.
- Audits site content, architecture and/or navigation to enhance UX (user experience).
- Social Media
- Analyzes and evaluates both existing and potential social media activities and strategies. Identifies and interprets social media trends.
- Designs editorial content strategy. Creates, curates and manages all public content.
- Other Member and External Stakeholder Communications
- Develops and implements plans for the publication, promotion, and distribution of position papers and other CPA reports and products, including the Annual Report.
- Writes speeches and talking points for the CPA President and other members of the Board of Directors.
- Prepares leave-behind materials for politicians and decision-makers and prepares and edits CPA presentations to external groups such as House of Commons or Senate Committees.
- Coordinates the design of the CPA booth and other marketing materials in collaboration with the Manager, Membership Services.
- Media/Public Relations
- Monitors national media coverage of psychiatry for relevant issues.
- Responds to media inquiries. Writes press releases as required.
- Prepares key messages for CPA spokespersons' interviews.
- Organizes media training for CPA spokespersons.
- Promotes CPA key messages, events, and products (e.g., position papers, CJP advisories and Annual Conference) to media.
- Maintains current media lists and nurtures relationships with journalists.
- Develops and maintains an expert database.

Governance:

- Supports the administration of the Economics and Research Committees, including activities around the JIRC (Research Committee) and National Economics Database (Economics Committee).
- Facilitates and supports internal and external communications of committee and council work.
