Harmony Community Food Centre (CFC), a program of South Riverdale Community Health Centre, in partnership with Community Food Centres Canada, is a welcoming place where people to come together to grow, cook, share and advocate for good food.

The role of Community Advocacy Program (CAP) Facilitator within the Harmony Community Food Centre program is to support people who live on a low income to navigate the system of social services and government entitlements and to engage and mobilize community members to take action on local issues and the larger structural forces that are ultimately responsible for food insecurity and poverty. The CAP Facilitator will support shared community meals, cooking and gardening programming and take leadership for advocacy programs that improve access to healthy food, build food knowledge and skill and support action on issues of poverty and food insecurity.

This work happens during community drop-in time/space, through community action training programs, by mentoring peer advocates, supporting civic engagement and public awareness campaigns, and mentoring students and volunteers within this program area. This work is rooted in strengths-based practice and an anti-oppression model. As such, the CAP Facilitator makes a special effort to engage low-income residents as program participants and volunteers including vulnerable adults, seniors, youth, and parents of young children. The CAP Facilitator will network and build connections with other organizations to support both community members and the work of the SRCHC and Harmony CFC.

This position is expected to work onsite.

**Responsibilities**:

- Design and provide quality programs and services aimed at improving access to healthy food, building food knowledge and skill, and supporting action on issues of poverty and food insecurity for service users
- Facilitate groups, building a safe and inclusive space for participants
- Actively monitor and evaluate ongoing programming and services
- Timely collection and reporting of program statistics
- Provide direct casework support to community members including form completion, systems navigation, advocacy, assessment, referrals, supportive counselling, crisis intervention as needed
- Mentor program supports, students and volunteers
- Assist with food-related and garden related program supports as needed
- Cooperate with staff to ensure program areas (kitchen, serving areas) are available for use and maintained to a high standard of safety and cleanliness
- Participate in infection control measures throughout the facility
- All other duties as required

**Qualifications**:

- Minimum College diploma in Social Services or Human Services (i.e. SSW, Health Promotion) or a related field of study, or equivalent work experience
- Minimum 2 years experience with program development, group facilitation, community outreach and community development
- Food Handler Certification is an asset
- Demonstrated leadership skills, especially in a volunteer/community development context
- Demonstrated ability to move people from knowledge to action; ability to inspire, teach and empower community members to engage in positive change
- Community organization knowledge and experience
- In-depth knowledge of local community programs and resources
- Strong knowledge of systems level issues/barriers to food security
- Knowledge of systems-level issues that impact low-income or marginalized people such as food insecurity, housing, income assistance or legal aid
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities using a strengths-based approach, showing sensitivity to those who experience poverty/discrimination
- Commitment to social justice and working towards improving food systems and poverty issues
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Experience in group facilitation
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Physical ability to lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
