Purpose

The Data De-Identification Expert will join the Brain-Heart Interconnectome Research Program team, a $109 million initiative funded by the CFREF (Canada First Research Excellence Fund). This innovative program will transform the prevention and treatment of brain-heart interconnected conditions, improving the health and quality of life of Canadians and people worldwide.

In this role, the Data De-Identification Expert will play a crucial role in ensuring the ethical handling and de-identification of data within the Brain-Heart Collaborative Data Portal. The portal is a consortium effort led by a range of partner organizations, designed to provide a user-friendly data platform with centralized access to curated brain-heart data, data resources, analytic tools and open science archiving capabilities. The portal will provide end users with cutting-edge data curation (e.g., access to multiple data sources, linkage capabilities, and analytic tools), a data repository, and data management and governance resources. The role would be ideal for someone with knowledge of the Canadian academic research and data landscape

Reporting to the Chairs of the Brain-Heart Collaborative Portal and working closely with the BHI Data Portal Steering Committee and the technical team based out of McGill University and The Royal. The Data De-Identification Expert will play a pivotal role in ensuring the de-identification of sensitive information to comply with privacy regulations and safeguard patient confidentiality. They will lead efforts to integrate data anonymization practices into the portal's technical operations. The role involves developing and implementing protocols for anonymizing sensitive data from diverse sources and adhering to privacy regulations and ethical guidelines. Collaborating with the McGill team and The Royal, the Data De-Identification Expert will assess the technical feasibility of anonymization methods, propose innovative solutions, and align technical initiatives with the portal's long-term objectives.

**Responsibilities**:

- Collaborate with researchers and technical teams from partner institutions to integrate data de-identification processes into the portal's technical operations and contribute to the development and implementation of data governance frameworks.
- Develop and maintain standardized protocols for data handling, including data anonymization and encryption, across diverse data sources.
- Ensure compliance with privacy regulations (e.g. PHIPA) and ethical guidelines through regular audits.
- Document de-identification processes and decisions for transparency. Implement quality assurance measures to maintain data integrity during de-identification.
- Facilitate secure and anonymized data access in accordance with data-sharing requirements and stakeholder needs.
- Conduct training programs on data de-identification best practices for stakeholders.

Mandatory qualifications
- Master’s degree (e.g., Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Security, Data Science, or degree in a related field)
- Requires 3 years of relevant experience in data de-identification or related roles.
- Strong understanding of privacy regulations (e.g., PHIPA) and best practices in data anonymization.
- Proficient in Python, R, SQL, Tableau, and Power BI

Desirable qualifications
- Knowledge of the academic research ecosystem and data management practices in Canada
- Experience in implementing data governance systems or tools
- Certification in relevant data anonymization and privacy frameworks (e.g.: Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) or Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP))
- Fluency in French is an asset but not mandatory
