The Government of Manitoba's Agriculture Department works collaboratively with citizens, industry, governments and other partners to enable the sustainable development and strengthen the resilience of Manitoba's agriculture and food processing industries. The Policy and Legislation Branch fosters science-based policy analysis and development, effective program development and delivery, relative to government priorities, and appropriate legislative and regulatory reform. This branch is composed of the following four sections: the Policy section, the Boards section, Legislative Development section and the Public Trust and Engagement section.

The Indigenous Engagement Consultant works with public servants and the agriculture and agri-food industry to provide guidance and identify approaches for Indigenous engagement, relationship-building, partnership development and reconciliation.

Qualifications:
**Essential**:

- Post-secondary education in Indigenous relations, community economic development, natural resource management, agriculture, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a related discipline
- Experience working with partners and right holders on Indigenous engagement and reconciliation
- Experience working with Indigenous governments and representative organizations in a natural resource context
- Excellent strategic thinking skills to independently conduct research, analysis and report development
- Knowledge of the principles of public engagement and advancing public participation
- Strong project management skills
- Strong facilitation skills to represent the department effectively in group sessions, discussions or meetings with Indigenous communities and representative organizations
- Strong verbal and written communication skills

**Duties**:
Reporting to the Manager of Public Trust and Engagement, the Indigenous Engagement Consultant contributes to the design of training and professional development opportunities for public servants related to such areas as Indigenous engagement, relationship-building, reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and Crown-Indigenous consultation.
Key duties also include:

- Provides support to public servants in relationship-building with First Nations governments, organizations and communities; Indigenous engagement initiatives; and supporting the department with identifying impacts on Treaty and Aboriginal Rights.
- Supports external stakeholders within the agriculture and agri-food sector to provide guidance and identify approaches for Indigenous engagement and support the development of Indigenous engagement work plans.
- Supports public servants to foster economic growth and development and participation in the agriculture and agri-food sectors within Indigenous communities.
- Functions as the department lead in Indigenous engagements, working group settings and discussions with Indigenous governments, communities and representative organizations.
- Functions as the department lead for the development of new policies, programs and initiatives to advance Indigenous participation in the agriculture and agri-food sectors.
