Infrastructure Planning plays an important role in the planning, design and implementation of physical space for departments, centres and institutes within the Faculty. We provide leadership and assistance on a broad range of infrastructure and planning projects and liaise with a variety of university groups that have a role in planning and construction. Infrastructure Planning ensures coordination between the various groups and success of overall project objectives.

Your Opportunity:
The Faculty of Arts & Science (FAS) occupies over 50 buildings across the University of Toronto’s downtown campus. Buildings include a variety of spaces such as laboratories

(including biological, chemical, laser, dry labs etc.); offices; teaching and student spaces. This position is responsible for providing leadership and expertise in space planning, facilities management, project development and management to support the Faculty of Arts and Science’s academic mission and operations.

This position reports to the Director, Infrastructure Planning in the Faculty of Arts and Science.

The incumbent is responsible for working with the Director, Infrastructure Planning to develop and implement comprehensive management policies with respect to facilities and space utilization. In collaboration with academic and administrative leaders within the Faculty, the incumbent is a key contributor to lab space planning for the Faculty including strategic planning to optimize space utilization, capital project planning and implementation on the St. George campus.

This position manages a number of administrative staff, and assumes overall responsibility for human resources, labour relations and financial management including dispute resolution and compliance with collective agreements. The incumbent directly manages the direct report staff and the quality and efficiency of work, ensuring the structure and duties are meeting operational objectives in the most effective manner. The manager also leads the development of emergency strategies and/or contingency plans in the event of a crisis involving lab space operations.

EDUCATION:
University degree in Architecture or Engineering is required.

EXPERIENCE:

- Must have a minimum of ten years’ progressively responsible related experience, preferably in a large research university or equivalent setting. Knowledge of laboratory and other research and teaching environments. Thorough understanding and extensive knowledge of building design, construction, engineering systems and practices.
- Effective budget planning, preparation, monitoring and reporting experience. A proven track record of effective human resources management and development.
- Minimum ten years of experience in statistical and facilities analysis and/or institutional facilities planning in the design and construction industry.
- Must have experience in providing complex services.

SKIILS:

- Strong leadership and management skills are essential. Superior project management, work organization, process management, effective negotiation and mediation skills. Ability to manage significant change, to multi-task and effectively prioritize. Proficient in computing skills, ability to draw and interpret sketches and architectural renderings.
- Expertise with a variety of project management and process improvement methodologies. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Very strong interpersonal and analytical skills; good organizational ability; initiative; judgment and tact.
- Good numerical skills required.
- Ability to use CAD software and spreadsheets/analytical software proficiently.
- Can conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem
- solving capabilities.
- Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including upper management, clients, and other departments.
