**The opportunity**:
Reporting to the Director, Indigenous Engagement and Communications, the Communications Lead will work with Indigenous Engagement and Communications and the Indigenous Student Centre. The Communications Lead will develop and implement annual communications strategies and day-to-day communications tactics for both areas to communicate effectively with the UM community and external communities. This position will also provide strategic communications support for OVPI and will be responsible for overseeing the promotion of Indigenous initiatives and events for Indigenous Engagement and Communications. The Communications Lead is responsible for overseeing the preparation and dissemination of materials that promote academic, cultural, personal, social, financial and spiritual supports available through the Indigenous Student Centre. The Communications Lead will also work directly with the Director of Indigenous Engagement and Communications and the Marketing Communications Office to effectively promote special projects and announcements for the OVPI.

**The qualifications and experience we’re looking for**:
THIS POSITION IS DESIGNATED FOR INDIGENOUS CANDIDATES. APPLICANTS MUST SELF-DECLARE ON THEIR COVER LETTER/RESUME AS INDIGENOUS (FIRST NATION, METIS AND/OR INUIT).
- Undergraduate Bachelors degree required (communications/journalism preferred).
- Three (3) years of directly related communications experience required.
- Extensive experience writing and editing for both print and digital media.
- Extensive demonstrated experience, knowledge, competency with respect to Indigenous cultures and histories.
- Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations.
- Demonstrated experience in developing strategic communications plans.
- Demonstrated experience preparing and delivering communications and marketing materials (print and digital).
- Experience developing and delivering programs for Indigenous youth.
- Experience in event planning and execution.
- Experience working with budgets preferred.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills (verbal and written) required.
- Excellent writing and editing skills required.
- Advanced level of proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint required.
- Advanced knowledge of Photoshop, InDesign, Drupal, Wordpress, and social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and/or the ability to learn and adapt to new computer and web programs, and social media trends quickly required.
- Excellent photography and videography skills required.
- Superior time management skills required.
- Demonstrated ability to work in close collaboration and partnership with academic and administrative colleagues, students, alumni, Elders, and community partner required.
- Ability to think critically and creatively required.
- Ability to work independently required.
- Must have a demonstrated ability to deal with high demand and/or stressful contacts.
- Must have a strong work ethic and be willing to take the initiative to solve problems and learn new tasks.
- Attention to detail is essential.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
- High energy level and a positive attitude, enjoys challenges, and copes well with change.
