Job Summary

The Department of Sociology has 35 tenured and tenure track faculty members, 6 continuing lecturers, approximately 25 sessional faculty, 2 active Emeriti, 1.5 M&P, 4.0 CUPE 2950 staff, 50 + teaching assistants and a small number of Visiting, Post-Doctoral Faculty and Research Associates. There are over 60 Graduate Students. Over 7,000 undergraduate students are enrolled in the winter session courses of which over 600 are in major, minor and honours programs. Approximately 1,000 enroll in summer session courses. In total, the department offers over 140 sections of undergraduate and graduate courses each year. The total budget, for the department is approximately $9 million, including GPOF and grants.

The Administrator is responsible for managing the complex administrative aspects of the department including developing, implementing and coordinating all non-academic activities with prime involvement in administrative, financial, human resource, information technology, communication, and spatial matters. The Administrator manages the finances, financial operations and accountability procedures and plays an essential role in financial planning processes. The Administrator develops and implements human resource procedures around hiring, supervising, training, evaluating and terminating staff to ensure the Department remains productive and effective. Manages research grants including liaising with granting agencies and other institutions regarding projects and budgeting and oversees the acquisition of supplies and equipment. The Administrator oversees the implementation of changes to the department s existing curriculum and coordinates with the Department Head to set course schedules and secure appropriate classroom space. The Administrator will oversee support for the department s growing online and social media presence. The department is housed in the Anthropology and Sociology Building. The incumbent is responsible for building activities and plant operations, liaising with those at UBC who maintain the physical plant and developing systems and procedures, and managing any maintenance and renovation projects. The Administrator will work closely with the staff in the Department of Anthropology around management of space, building safety and building management. The department shares over 3,647 sq. m. or 39,256 sq.ft. of spatial resources with the Department of Anthropology, including office, laboratory, classroom and storage space shared with the Department of Anthropology. The Manager is also responsible for liaising with other units in the building, Canadian Literature and BC Studies.

Organizational Status

The incumbent reports to the Department Head and supervises 44.5 FTE support staff as well as Teaching Assistants and Work Study/Work Learn students. The incumbent interacts with faculty members, students, staff, general public, the President's Office, the Dean s offices and other academic and administrative units on campus as well as external agencies. The incumbent interacts closely with the academic and administrative staff of the Department of Anthropology around building use and maintenance. The incumbent is part of the Faculty of Arts Administrative Group and works closely with other Arts administrators and the Assistant Deans, Facilities Human Resources and Finance to better the administrative practices in the Faculty.
