The Department of Microbiology & Immunology is a core department of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and places a special emphasis on biomedical research and teaching with a focus on human disease, infection, and immunity.

The mission of the Klein Lab is to define mechanisms the contribute to altered brain function after exposure to emerging RNA viruses. The lab uses in vitro and in vivo models to examine how viruses disrupt the blood brain barrier, promote microglia and astrocyte activation, and disrupt synapses and adult neurogenesis in the forebrain. We also collaborate with PET chemists and neuroimagers to identify prognostic biomarkers that can be used to follow treatments. Central to our work is the use of genetically modified mice to trace molecular mechanisms that contribute to post-viral cognitive dysfunction.

**Responsibilities**:
The role will provide technical expertise and coordination, including managing budgets and monitoring expenditures to ensure compliance with the research plan and funding agency guidelines, and will facilitate collaborations and communications between teams, with investigators and other partners to ensure the successful attainment of research objectives. The Research Lab Manager will assist with the development and maintenance of SOPs between different research groups and assist Dr. Klein with timely coordination for data collecting, recording, management, analysis and reporting. The role will develop and set goals in collaboration with Dr. Klein ensuring milestones and project deadlines are met.

**Qualifications**:
**Education**:

- Master’s of Science in Life Sciences
- PhD in Life Sciences is preferred

**Experience**:

- 5 years’ research experience in a neurobiology lab with experience in behavioral or imaging analysis
- Experience managing research projects, managing and monitoring research budgets and supporting research staff
- Post doctoral experience and publication record in neuroscience, behavior or imaging preferred
- Experience interacting with students and managing research projects is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- In-depth knowledge of research design, principles and techniques related to neurobiology or immunology
- Knowledge of general laboratory procedures and familiarity with methods for research design, implementation, and analysis
- Familiarity with project management software, and communication tools financial principles and budgeting with the ability to ensure expenditures and resources are within allotments, and to make appropriate modifications when required
- Self-driven individual who is highly motivated and possesses an intrinsic passion for quality
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively on priorities and to work flexibly around variable work demands
- Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple activities that are accurate and thorough, sometimes of a complex nature or involving competing priorities
- Communication skills with an ability to lead meetings
- Ability to focus and attend to detail while also understanding the big picture
- Ability to delegate work and provide team members with clear direction and support in meeting their objectives
- Excellent written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to complete detailed analytics and reports
- Project management skills with an ability to manage a project from conception to completion within tightly prescribed timelines
- Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) with the ability to learn and use relevant software that achieves required outcomes and is in line with best practices
- Demonstrated ability to research/investigate issues and resolve problems
- Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the research group’s events and activities
