The Biotron is a unique, purpose-built facility housing specialized environmental chambers, laboratories and equipment dedicated to research in the fields of environmental sciences, biotechnologies, materials and biomaterials, and engineering. The Biotron is a keystone facility supportng research on biotic and abiotic processes in the environment and specializes in the simulaton of natural environments at a range of scales.

The key goal of the Biotron’s Analytcal Services lab is to facilitate Western’s educa¿¿onal and research outcomes by providing excellence in environmental chemical analysis, in partcular metal speciaton. This is achieved through laboratory testng and providing publicaton quality data; training of researchers, graduate and undergraduate students in chemical analysis; and offering technical support to Western researchers and beyond.

**Responsibilities**:

- The Laboratory Assistant will be responsible for carrying out research functions under the supervision of the Lead Analysts of the Analytical Services lab. Under this supervision, the incumbent will prepare samples as required for analysis (weighing, filtration, preservation, etc.), routine chemical reagent preparation and handling, as well as wash, clean and prepare sample handling equipment in the lab for daily analyses. The incumbent will also maintain laboratory inventory (reagents, consumables, supplies), manage intake of environmental samples from within the research group and from collaborating organizations, and verify Chain of Custody and Request for Analysis forms.**Qualifications**:
**Education**:
- Community College Diploma OR Undergraduate Degree in a related field

**Experience**:
- 1 year of work experience supporting research in a related technical field

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:
- Highly motivated with good communication skills
- Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
- Ability to follow instructions and processes with high attention to detail
- Ability to employ a systematic and efficient approach to work
- Computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel
- Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
- Demonstrated ability to perform standard laboratory procedures (e.g., weighing, pipetting, etc.)
- Ability to work independently and effectively under mínimal supervision and as a member of the team to achieve department goals
