Respecting the historical impact of colonization, the beauty and diversity of Traditional Indigenous beliefs & cultures & the complex Western medical approaches to health, the Navigator establishes relationships that enable trust & healing and connect clients with traditional Indigenous healing services. They provide advocacy, support, counseling, navigation, & education within a harm reduction & trauma informed practice.

**Description**:
Under the guidance & direction of the Manager, the Navigator facilitates respectful working relationships & health care for Indigenous clients while building increased understanding & trust with health care providers & AHS. This position is also responsible & accountable to: Advocate & support Indigenous clients & families across the continuum of care within community settings & health facilities. Identify health & social support needs & refer to the most appropriate services & programs. Promote awareness & assist in accessing AHS & non-AHS programs & services. Support clients who prefer Traditional Indigenous healing practices & assist healthcare providers to understand & respect their choice. Support & guide clients with addiction & mental health concerns. Participate in health promotion & prevention programs which focus on self-management & self-determination. Assist AHS staff & physicians to better understand health concerns, social support network & barriers to access. Provide consultation & assistance regarding culturally informed services. Travel may be required.

**Required Qualifications**:
Some post-secondary education with diploma/college certificate in related health care discipline such as Social Work, Nursing or Community Health Representative. If part of a registered profession—registration in good standing with applicable governing body.

**Additional Required Qualifications**:
Minimum 5 years’ experience working with Indigenous Peoples and communities. Knowledge and respect for the diversity of Indigenous populations, communities, and political structures. Knowledge of Indigenous history, worldview, perspectives, healing practices, beliefs/values, culture and traditions and spirituality. Ability to facilitate connection to traditional healing practices. Education and/or experience working in addiction and mental health. Experience in a health care setting or human services field. Experience working in a culturally diverse environment. Demonstrated ability and comfort with coaching and teaching individuals and groups. Effective oral and written skills and use of computer software (Connect Care, Microsoft Office, etc.). Evidence of strong interpersonal and communication skills. Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Ability to work independently or within a team. Evidence of initiative, flexibility, and strong commitment. Demonstrated punctuality, adaptability, discretion, and confidentiality.

**Preferred Qualifications**:
Degree in health care, social sciences and/or humanities would be an asset. Ability to speak or understand an Indigenous language. Group facilitation skills and experience would be an asset. Must be able to identify own learning needs and seek guidance in professional practice where knowledge deficits occur.
