With a staff of 14,000, the Toronto Catholic is a dynamic school board and is seeking a full time Indigenous Cultural Liaison.
**CRITERIA FOR AN INTERVIEW ARE AS FOLLOWS**:
Minimum two (2) year College diploma in Humanities, Event Planning, Social Services, or related field
Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Knowledge of Indigenous culture and Indigenous ways of knowing is a requirement
Understanding of First Nation, Inuit and Métis needs including identity, self-determination and cultural preservation
Lived experiences deeply rooted in First Nation, Inuit and/or Métis communities
Working knowledge of First Nation, Inuit and Métis and Inuit cultures and traditions
Experience in a school board or education setting an asset
Demonstrates sound judgement and sensitivity, and ability to build rapport with various stakeholders
Understanding of the diversity and composition of Indigenous communities
Ability to take initiative and be proactive to identify gaps and potential requirements for school activities and events to promote cultural awareness
A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle (eligibility for mileage reimbursement)
**MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:
Reporting to and under the direction of the Indigenous Affairs Advisor, this position plays a crucial role in fostering an inclusive and respectful environment that celebrates and integrates Indigenous cultures within the school community. This role involves providing cultural support, traditional teachings, and facilitating cultural activities, as well as supporting educators and students in their engagement with Indigenous knowledge and practices. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Provide cultural support to educators Grades K-12
Assist teachers in engaging with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Indigenous guest speakers for classroom visits and activities
Coordinate access to Elders and Knowledge Keepers to provide traditional teachings and ceremonies
Ensure the cultural needs of teachers, students, and schools are met through appropriate cultural programming
Facilitate the inclusion of Indigenous knowledge and practices in school activities.
Plan, coordinate, and deliver cultural activities and events for students and staff. Include after school activities
Promote cultural awareness and appreciation through various school-wide initiatives.
Encourage participation in cultural activities that highlight Indigenous traditions and practices
Help develop and lead the Indigenous Student Association. Support Indigenous students in celebrating their culture and fostering a sense of community
Perform other assigned duties as required
