Job Summary

Organizational Status

Professor Curtis Berlinguette (UBC Chemistry Department; UBC Chemical & Biological Engineering Department; Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute) leads an interdisciplinary team of ~40 scientists and engineers that design and build advanced electrochemical reactors to power the planet. This position is part of a sub-team within the Berlinguette Group that studies nuclear fusion in solid-state materials. This sub
- team specializes in developing materials of interest for such studies, as well as the development of a novel benchtop plasma fusion reactor that allows for expansive studies in underexplored energy regimes for nuclear fusion.

Work Performed

2. Initiate and perform studies to identify opportunities and products that relate to fusion research and potentially other projects;
3. Lead fundraising activities for fusion research projects;
4. Conduct research of companies that may be potential industrial partners and/or funders;
6. Develop of technoeconomic analyses (lead these efforts, with input from technical/scientific team members);
7. Establish and maintain relationships with stakeholders in the fusion community;
8. Develop proposals for new fusion research directions;
9. Align research directions with government priorities and commercial market opportunities;

10. Plans advertising and promotional campaigns for the fusion project including researching marketing strategies and makes informed recommendations for implementation of novel marketing strategies.

11. Assess technology readiness level of reactor(s) for different markets.

12. Communicate research progress and business opportunities through oral presentations and written reports.

14. Travel nationally and internationally as needed to attend business and technical meetings.

Work is expected to be of professional quality. Recommendations and decisions are expected to affect future funding, and may also affect effectiveness of the team’s projects and contribute to the ultimate success of the team’s operation. Work will be reviewed at a high level by Prof. Berlinguette.

Provide direction to technical staff by defining commercially-relevant research projects with clear technical milestones and deliverables. Provide direction to researchers to align research programs with the market needs. May supervise project team members (e.g., postdoctoral fellows, technical staff, graduate students, co-op students) when they are performing tasks related to market research and/or technoeconomic analyses.

Minimum Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline, and minimum of six years of relevant work experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Exceptional communication and collaboration skills;
- Demonstrated ability to establish a vision and plan strategically in a complex, competitive field;
- Domain expertise in technology commercialization and early-stage funding, and existing relationships with leaders in corporate innovation, seed-stage investment and technology transfer;
- Ability to analyze and systematically evaluate ventures - proficient with financial modeling, conducting market analysis, and strategic planning;
- Experience leading teams and working in start-up/technology company in leadership roles;
- Strong understanding of business models and drivers of success;
- Experience and confidence working with investors and senior tech executives;
- Demonstrated ability to raise funding from government agencies, corporations, and/or other sources;
