**Working for the Department/Faculty**
The Department of Physics at the University of Alberta has approximately 50 faculty members and 50 postdoctoral fellows and research associates, including a large group of researchers in the Centre for Particle Physics. Members of CPP actively participate in national and international subatomic and astroparticle experiments, including taking lead roles in experimental dark matter searches in Canada and around the world. The particle physics team works in an international, diverse, and supportive environment.
**Position**
The PICO experiment is the leading dark matter search experiment aiming to find dark matter interactions coupling via the nuclear spin of the target material. PICO is currently operating a large bubble chamber at SNOLAB called PICO-40L. The data from this chamber will deliver another world leading result in spin-depended dark matter searches.
The PICO collaboration is also in the process of building a large-scale, super-heated dark matter detector at SNOLAB called PICO-500. The Alberta group on PICO has one faculty member, one research associate, one postdoctoral fellow and several graduate and undergraduate students. Our group is responsible for the optical data acquisition system of PICO-40L, for parts of the optical data reconstruction, for the thermal control system of PICO-500 and several other important subsystems of the new detector. PICO-500 represents the largest currently possible bubble chamber for dark matter searches and it aims at reaching the neutrino fog in the spin dependent low mass parameter space.
**Duties**
The duties of this position will include designing, modelling, building, testing and commissioning ultra-low-background detectors, as well as developing software for Monte Carlo simulations and data analysis.
**Minimum Qualifications**
- PhD in experimental particle physics or nuclear physics
**Preferred Qualifications**
- Experience with data analysis
- Experience with GEANT based Monte Carlo simulations
- Experience with low background techniques and methods
- Experience with mentoring students
- Vacuum and leak checking experience
- Analysis of optical data
- Valid driver’s license for field work
