**Working for the Department/Faculty**
The mission of the Department of Emergency Medicine is to optimize and advance the provision of emergency medical care through excellence in education, research, and community service.
The Department offers training for Emergency Medicine trainees through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited program (5 years) and the College of Family Physicians of Canada (1 extra year of training after completion of a Family Medicine residency). Clinical experience is offered to medical students and residents from other training programs during their mandatory emergency medicine rotations.
The Department’s research groups are heavily involved in evidence-based medicine and have produced high-quality evidence-based research for over 20 years. Knowledge synthesis and translation activities have provided a platform from which to exchange valuable information that has been used to improve the quality of care delivered to patients in the ED in Alberta, nationally, and internationally.
**Position Summary**
The EEM research program contains a portfolio of competitively funded provincial projects utilizing mixed methods to examine inequity in health care and health care access. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be supporting research generating systems level interventions in emergency departments across the province to reduce anti-Indigenous racism and promote equity-oriented care.
Work environment: Hybrid remote and in-office work, and opportunities to travel throughout Alberta for meetings, partner engagement, and data collection.
**Duties**
- Execute research activities including the design and implementation of projects
- Develop research methods and objectives and conduct activities related to equity-oriented emergency care research projects
- Ensure that deliverables for each research project are identified, and the timeline is adhered to accordingly
- Conduct observational, interview, and survey data collection
- Conduct policy and program review
- Leads the selection and validation of quantitative measures
- Contribute to writing peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts
- Interpret and present technical information regarding research techniques and outcomes for relevant stakeholders (community, government, funders, etc.)
- Work closely and cooperatively with project staff
- Consult with principal investigators, co-principal investigators, project partners, community partners, and staff
- Contribute to research study protocols, and the maintenance of operating policies and procedures, ensuring that all are compliant with University guidelines and policies, TCPS2, and research agreements with project partners
- Comply with First Nations Ownership, Control, Access to, and Possession of data principles (OCAP®) where applicable
- Contribute to the dissemination of research activities to affiliated communities
- Presents research results in team meetings, at seminars, scientific conferences and/or related settings
- Mentors research staff and graduate trainees
**Minimum Qualifications**
- PhD in Indigenous studies, sociology, public health, community health, political science, women’s studies, or other relevant field
- PhD completed within 0-5 years
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
- Experience working with Indigenous organizations or community-based organizations
- Knowledge of Indigenous research methods, critical theory, anti-racism theory, institutional ethnography, and/or postcolonial theory
- Quantitative methods training and experience conducting quantitative analysis
