Job Description Summary

The Midwifery Student Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of student recruitment, advising, educational program planning, and student retention initiatives for two UBC Midwifery programs - the 4-year undergraduate Midwifery program and the Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program (IEMBP). The undergraduate program has 100-120 students and the Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging program has an intake of 16 students a year. The Manager is the key point of contact for prospective students seeking admission into the Midwifery undergraduate program and is one of the UBC Midwifery representatives for student placement in the provincial health authorities and the hospitals within these health authorities. The incumbent is responsible for creating all student marketing and recruitment initiatives and materials as well as for identifying which cities provincially to focus student recruitment strategies/initiatives which includes social media. The manager is responsible for tracking and analyzing student retention, attrition, and success rates and recommending strategies for improving student retention, particularly for students from diverse cultural backgrounds. The incumbent supports all student admission, educational planning, course advising, and financial aid services to the Midwifery undergraduate program.

This individual will be the representative of the Midwifery Education Program at the administrative and management level at UBC, the public and professional organizations in the province of British Columbia, and within the partner jurisdictions, who are involved in midwifery maternity health care.

This position reports to the Midwifery Senior Administrative Business Manager. The incumbent liaises with the Program Director, faculty, instructors, guest speakers, students, staff, and community midwives, and interacts with UBC Student Recruitment and Advising Office, Student Financial Services office, Enrolment Services Office, Classroom Services Office, and the offices of the Department of Family Practice and Faculty of Medicine.

Organizational Status

The Midwifery program offers the sole educational program for registered midwives in BC. Operating as an independent unit within the Department of Family Practice, Faculty of Medicine, the program has all of the same responsibilities as a School and is directly funded by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Ministry of Health. The Midwifery program is a 4-year baccalaureate program. The curriculum combines broad-based knowledge and understanding in the humanities and the social and bio-medical sciences. A variety of teaching methods are used, including seminars, laboratories, web-based technology, distance-learning, and clinical preceptorship. This teaching is done in lecture theatres, seminar rooms, preceptor's offices, homes, hospitals and labs throughout the province and through an elective learning opportunity in international settings. Currently, over 150 clinical faculty teach student midwives, and the number of clinical faculty members will increase as the Midwifery program at UBC continues to grow.

As a degree-granting program for a distinct health profession, the program is responsible for its own admissions and selection process, and a unique curriculum that must be consistent with preparatory, regulatory, and certification guidelines described by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives, and the Canadian Midwifery Regulators Consortium. The program represents a newly registered profession in the province and is the only resource for the development of future midwifery educators and the development of
