What you’ll be doing:
As the Special Education Support Staff Supervisor, you will spend most of your time in our schools helping our support staff do their best work. At school, you will be providing support staff with job-embedded coaching to empower them to support complex student needs and behaviour. Through effective collaboration, active listening and critical observation, you will identify functions of student behaviour and use ABA plans and tracking documents to ascertain an evidence-based response. When you aren’t in

schools, you are developing professional development opportunities, based on key areas of growth and development for support staff. You’ll work daily with support staff, but also with the entire special education department (consultants, itinerant teachers etc.), principals and vice-principals, community agency staff and senior administration. More key duties and responsibilities are listed below.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides direct supervision of Itinerant Special Education Workers (ISEWs). Determines the scheduling of ISEWs.

Develops awareness and visibility throughout the schools and community of the Educational Assistant/Autism Spectrum Disorder Worker (ASDW) roles and functions through assisting in the training of Educational Assistants, assisting in the scheduling of Educational Assistants, identifying skills and clarifying the role of Educational Assistants and maintains communications through newsletters and executive summaries as required.

Develops rationale and organizes Professional Development and Board Initiatives for Educational Assistants in collaboration with Learning Consultants by determining training needs. Develops, delivers, and tracks training to Educational Assistants and Autism Spectrum Disorder Workers (preventing and responding to interfering behaviours, ABC Tracking, data analysis, injury prevention, etc.).

Provides support and assistance to the Principals in the evaluation and performance review of Educational Assistants.

Provides mentoring/coaching to Educational Assistants, Autism Spectrum Disorder Workers, and teachers with respect to effective team work and implementation of evidenced based practices including ABA, regulation and universal design for learning strategies.

In conjunction with the Special Education team, develops techniques/best practices of Educational Assistants to increase independence, increase peer interaction and self-efficacy for students.

Provides support as required to Principals and Vice-Principals.

Provides support and assistance to Administration in the effective allocation of Educational Assistants.

Assists with recruitment and interviewing of Educational Assistants for employment as supply educational assistants and permanent employees.

Develops processes and maintains data on the frequency and intensity of incidents of injuries to Educational Assistants for analysis.

Provides training to Principals, Vice Principals, teachers regarding positive behaviour interventions and management, EA self-care and using a relational approach for problem-solving.
