The First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Division is dedicated to supporting change across the education system to close the systemic achievement gap between First Nations, Métis and Inuit students and non-Indigenous students, and to ensure that all Alberta students are knowledgeable, understanding and respectful of the rich diversity of Indigenous peoples, including their cultures, language and histories; the importance of treaties; and the legacy of Indian Residential Schools.

The work of the branch involves engagement across all levels and sectors of the First Nations education systems to impact all Alberta students and teachers, as well as focussing specifically on supporting First Nations student success.

**Salary**: $3,147.32 to $4,235.37 bi-weekly ($82,145 - $110,543/year)

**Role Responsibilities**:
Reporting to the Director, First Nations, South, the Manager, First Nations Southern Region is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with First Nations in Southern Alberta. This includes overseeing a broad scope of initiatives that eliminate the systemic achievement gap between First Nations and other students in Alberta. This position leads project implementation with a wide range of partners representing diverse interests. This work includes extensive engagement with external stakeholders including senior officials, education stakeholders, and community representatives from First Nations. The Manager, First Nations, South is also responsible for assisting the ministry in the implementation of the education related work of the protocol tables. The position is also required to monitor and manage Ministry investments, including grant and other funding agreements.

This position is responsible for supervising a a team of professional staff including community engagement specialists, strategic initiative analysts and human relations, diplomacy and negotiation skills are required for this position as is specialized experience working with First Nations communities and organizations, in-depth experience navigating First Nations political contexts and protocols.

The Manager, First Nations Southern Region will be accountable for the following activies in the division:

- Lead planning and project implementation with community and cross-ministry partners.
- Provide supervision to the First Nations, South unit in the First Nations sector.
- Manage grant programs and other funding agreements with partners.
- Provide strategic advice and support to the Ministry and First Nations educations stakeholders.
- Supports the Director to achieve the mandate, goals and operations of the branch.
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

**Qualifications**:
University graduation in Native Studies, Social Sciences, Education, or in a field related to the position assignment, supplemented by four (4) years related experience. Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

The position requires the following experience and technical competencies:
**Required**:

- Significant experience working directly with First Nations communities and organizations.
- In-depth understanding of First Nations stakeholders and communities including governance and school environments, as well as experience navigating First Nations political contexts and protocols.
- Significant experience managing a team of professional staff which includes providing direction, leadership and organization over the activities of the unit or the specialized functions performed.
- Knowledge of First Nations histories, cultures and communities.
- Knowledge of provincial legislation and policies affecting First Nations peoples generally and education in particular.
- Knowledge of administrative structures in the education system.
- Proven ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships and partnerships with stakeholders both within and outside of Alberta Public Service.
- Strong project and grant management experience, including the ability to lead cross-ministry and cross-divisional projects.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
