Reporting to the Director, Indigenous Affairs, the Community Coordinator is responsible for leading the annual preparation of and arranging all aspects for learner placements in Indigenous communities. This position also acts as an ambassador for NOSM U learners, staff and faculty. The Coordinator champions local collaboration between communities and NOSM U as well as assists with Indigenous learner recruitment. The Coordinator is the point of contact for Local Community Coordinators.

This position is covered by the Terms and Conditions of the OPSEU Unit 677 Collective Agreement (Unit 2). A copy is available on the NOSM University website.

**Responsibilities**:
Tasks may include but are not limited to the following:

- Leads the detailed operational logistics of learner placements in Indigenous communities that meet the program needs and meets the remote placement guidelines.
- Acts as main point of contact with community leaders, medical and health care staff to coordinate the details of learner placements and establish local working groups.
- Leads and delivers the Annual Local Community Coordinators (LCC) Orientation Sessions.
- Coordinates Sharing/Learning Circles as required.
- Attends and represents the IAU at meetings with local community groups such as Chief and Council and Health Centers, Nursing Stations which may include other Medical School staff participating.
- Acts as NOSM/IAU representative when visiting various Northern and remote communities for the purposes of recruitment, retention and on-going community engagement.
- Participates in remote site program evaluations.
- Facilitates the formalization of the commitment between communities and the Medical School to host learners long-term through a variety of agreements such as Memorandums of Understanding, Band Council Resolutions and Affiliation Agreements.
- Annual review, update and creating proper file management/storage for Community Agreements.
- Liaises with various internal units, committees and external stakeholders to facilitate coordination of community-based events.
- Oversees outreach and engagement initiatives, providing community-specific knowledge and protocols where required.
- Acts as main point of contact for LCC’s to support, recommend and facilitate participation in the NOSM activities and opportunities including but not limited to Professional Development.
- Convene a network of LCC’s.
- Maintain emergency procedures and workflows for Learner placements.
- Advise the Director and School Leadership on key community contacts.
- Maintains statistics on all activities related to the position.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

**Qualifications**:
**Education**:

- A postsecondary degree in a related field such as Health, Indigenous Studies or related field from a recognized postsecondary institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**:

- A minimum of five (5) year of related experience in coordination of programs in an educational setting and in Indigenous communities is required.
- Must have Indigenous lived experience, as well as demonstrated experience working with Indigenous peoples, cultures and communities
- Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous communities, organizations, political structures and healthcare systems in Northern communities.
- An understanding of Indigenous communities and their needs as it relates to medical education and learner placements.
- Knowledge of Indigenous cultures and traditions, including cultural protocols and processes, issues within Indigenous communities.
- Knowledge of Indigenous organizations and university community, cultural diversity of Northern Ontario, medical resources in rural and remote communities and rural and remote community living experiences.
- Understanding of socio-economic conditions of the Indigenous communities of Northern Ontario.
- Knowledge of various health programs, regulations, and procedures of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada and other Federal/Provincial Governments as they relate to health care and funding arrangements with the First Nations.
- Experience working with other software programs with formatting/utility capabilities of word processing (i.e., Microsoft Excel, Word) and with NOSM’s custom programs.
- Knowledge and experience in operating/hosting remote meeting technologies.
- Proven experience in coordinating various tasks under tight deadlines.
- The ability to communicate effectively and to express oneself clearly verbally, and in writing, and uses a variety of media through formal presentations.
- Work within established organizational practices, protocols and policies.
- Support Communications in social media outreach to Indigenous communities, organizations and associations in Northern Ontario.
- Ability to work individually as well as part of a team
- Knowledge of university administration policies and procedures is an asset
