Indigenous Courtworker

**Job Purpose**:
Provide advocacy to Indigenous people who are involved in the Canadian justice system to help them better understand their rights, options and responsibilities when appearing before the Ontario Courts of Justice. By ensuring Indigenous people have access to legal representation and making referrals and recommendations to the individuals whom you work with. Every effort should be made to present these plans of action to courts for consideration.
**Skills/Qualifications**
- Diploma or degree in the Justice, Social Services or related field of study
- Knowledge of the structure and procedures of the Criminal Justice System
- Knowledge of the Criminal Code and Young Offenders Act and other relevant acts
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality
- Must possess excellent interviewing and counselling skills
- Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of Aboriginal language and culture an asset
- Computer literacy - must have experience with Microsoft Office and Outlook
- Collecting statistical information for reporting purposes
- Must be honest, empathetic and respectful as these attributes are fundamental to being an effective Courtworker
- Knowledge and experience working with Aboriginal people
- Ability to work within a team-oriented environment
- Work experience in client advocacy and client liaison with various service providers
- Must possess valid Ontario Driver's License, have access to a reliable vehicle and be willing to travel if required
- Superior ability to work within deadlines and under mínimal supervision
- Must be able to work with mainstream justice personnel and authority figures in an appropriate manner so as not to cause a detriment to the clientele served, the Courtworker program, N'Swakamok or it's affiliates
- Must include up to date CPIC which includes Vulnerable Sector
