**Job Summary**
Are you a creative and energetic student looking to gain hands-on experience in arts and/or education? Join the team at the Varley Art Gallery this summer, and work with children between ages 4 and 12, playing outdoors and facilitating art lessons while practicing valuable skills you’ll use throughout your career.

**Key Roles and Responsibilities**
- Designs and delivers activity plans as approved by the Summer Camp Director and Varley Program Coordinator. Ensures lessons are reviewed and are ready to be presented to the campers prior to the program delivery.
- Prioritizes child well-being, safety and protection throughout the camp. Evaluates situations for potential risks to the safety, protection and well-being of campers and staff, proactively taking mitigating actions to address such risks; maintains ratios and completes headcounts according to the City Camp policies and procedures
- Facilitates daily camp activities such as games, art activities, and exhibition-related projects
- Follows City of Markham policies and procedures in program activities
- Maintains positive, constructive relationships with camp staff and volunteers with the goal of meeting camper needs.
- Helps to ensure programming is adapted to camper needs with regard to quality, safety, hygiene, weather, breaks etc.
- Promptly reports absences to the Camp Director, Serves as a liaison with parents of campers, reinforcing City of Markham customer service, diversity and inclusion
- Prepares, organizes and maintains program equipment and supplies, reporting any inventory shortages to the Camp Director; Organizes and assists with set-up, and clean-up of camp events, activities and programs
- Demonstrates the confidence, and ability to make decisions independently of peers and in the best interests of the campers.
- Resolves problems, and conflicts effectively as they arise.
- Ensures all participants are aware of upcoming events and schedule changes
- Works with Inclusion staff as needed to ensure all campers are able to participate.
- Coaches and mentors volunteers and campers, providing feedback to the Volunteer Coordinator through formal assessments
- Provides regular updates and feedback to the Camp Director
- Participates in orientation, training sessions and staff meetings
- Other duties as required

**Qualifications**
- A passion for fine arts; visual arts, arts administration, art history or early childhood education.
- Experience developing, and instructing art lessons to children; previous camp involvement an asset.
- Ability to adapt programming to meet the needs of individual participants.
- Prioritizes health and safety of all participants, staff and volunteers.
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Capacity to provide excellent customer service.
- Welcoming, and inclusive attitude.
- Legally permitted to work in Canada
- Between the ages of 15 and 30, a requirement of the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) government program
- Current Standard First Aid with CPR 'C' is required
- HIGH FIVE Healthy Child Development certificate is required
- Clear Vulnerable Sector Screening

Summer student applicants must be currently enrolled in a full-time educational institution and must also be enrolled in a full time educational institution in the fall. All offers of employment for this position will be conditional on satisfactory reference checks and vulnerable sector screening checks as required
