**Professional Practice Leader, Nursing**

BC Children’s Hospital

Vancouver, BC

The Professional Practice Leader: Nursing provides expert leadership, consultation, advice and assistance to programs and departments across the Children’s & Women’s Health Centre of British Columbia (C&W) or the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) on projects and initiatives designed to support professional nursing practice. In this unique role, the incumbent collaborates with a wide variety of people inside and outside the organization and the Health Authority, including educators, nursing leaders and other professionals to identify desired practice outcomes, develop work plans, supervise project workers and implement plans. The Professional Practice Leader: Nursing is required to work with a wide range of individuals and groups within and beyond nursing and the Health Authority in order to plan, lead and coordinate initiatives that support and enhance the quality of nursing care delivery across the organization. This is a senior nursing leadership position within the Health Authority. The incumbent is required to work in an environment that is complex and ambiguous, and lead or manage complex projects and initiatives independently with little supervision. In order to accomplish assignments, he/she is required to have extensive knowledge of both the health care system and the profession of nursing, together with well-developed skills in leadership and project management. The position is forward focused, so the incumbent is expected to anticipate challenges and lead planning and implementation initiatives to address them in a proactive way. In order to do this, the incumbent will be expected to exercise judgment at a high level and to manage both expected and unexpected outcomes of these initiatives with skill and diplomacy.

**What you’ll do**
- Initiate regular scans of the environment, literature and innovative projects to identify emerging practice trends; working with Directors, unit-based leaders, nurses and other disciplines within the PHSA and across Health Authorities to identify practice issues and planning and implementing strategies to address emerging challenges in consultation with the Nursing Leaders and in keeping with Department and organizational goals. Take steps to ensure that the plans and strategies are grounded in best practice standards and reflect advances in knowledge about nursing practice and patient care.
- Take a leadership role in a wide range of projects designed to address C&W and PHSA-wide operational goals and vision, including quality of practice initiatives, new technology integration or innovative practice approaches. Engage in consultation with nurses at all levels of the organization and with other disciplines within and beyond the Health Authority to ensure that planned practices are designed to support the maintenance or enhancement of clinical care delivery.
- Participate on internal and external committees or consultations to address professional practice issues and support their resolution. Remain current with emerging trends in patient care and nursing and interprofessional practice. Conduct a thorough and regular review of relevant literature, engage in continuing education, and develop and maintain professional contacts and networks to facilitate the appropriate disposition of requests for information and support for projects from nurses.
- Initiate and/or participate in planning processes, including supporting the determination of goals and objectives for Nursing within the facilities or at the PHSA level. Advise and make recommendations to the Director of Professional Practice regarding trends and opportunities that will help to advance nursing practice or maintain sustainability of the nursing workforce. Work closely with the Department of Learning and Development, the Department of Quality, Safety & Risk Management, clinical programs and other groups on special projects to address clinical issues, educational needs and retention strategies. Support other Professional Practice and operational leaders in the development of goals and objectives related to quality of practice.

**What you bring**

**Qualifications**:

- A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Masters Degree in Nursing or related field
- Five (5) years of recent, progressive experience in nursing roles that require leadership, facilitation, education, consultation, project management and research utilization.
