**Organic Chemistry Scientist (Student)**

West Fraser’s Research and Development Center (RDC) is looking for a scientist to work on biopolymers (lignin) for wood adhesives. The goal is to replace petroleum-based thermoset adhesives by more environmentally friendly alternatives, aimed at reducing West Fraser’s carbon footprint. The project will be centered on construction panel manufacture. The applicant will need to have a good chemical understanding and show an eagerness to review the latest literature, suggest potential approaches and perform lab testing.

**Duties and responsibilities include**:

- Literature review (patents, articles).
- Understand lignin chemical structure and reactive sites
- Elaborate experimental plan to solubilize and/or activate lignin reaction sites
- Conduct lab experiments
- Conduct adhesive testing and performance evaluation.
- Write reports

**Availability: Summer 2023**

**Duration: 4-month term, possibility of extension**

**Skills: ability to work independently, troubleshoot complex problems, work well as part of a team, hands-on in the lab, perseverant**

**Hours: 36.25 hrs. /week**

**Scientifique en chimie organique (étudiant)**
- Revue de littérature (brevets, articles).
- Comprendre la structure chimique de la lignine et les sites réactifs
- Élaborer un plan expérimental pour solubiliser et/ou activer les sites de réaction de la lignine
- Mener des expériences en laboratoire
- Participer aux tests d'adhésifs et à l'évaluation de la performance des panneaux.
- Rédiger des rapports
