Reporting to the Vice-President, Academic & Provost, the University Librarian leads the University Library in the delivery of a modern and effective library system that meets both institutional needs and the individual requirements of students, faculty, staff, researchers and members of the local and wider communities. The incumbent directly supervises the Assistant University Librarian (AUL), and six librarians, with technical staff reporting directly to the AUL.

**Summary of Responsibilities**:

- Services & Operations_
- In consultation with the Vice -President, Academic & Provost, recommend future directions and strategies to insure that the University Library meets the needs of the curriculum and the University community; participates in the development and implementation of University policy relating to academic services
- Plan library collections and services in support of the OCAD University’s (OCAD U) curriculum and research activities, in consultation with Deans, Directors, Managers, and librarians
- Plan and provide documentation in support of University interests and activities, in consultation with the Deans, Directors, Managers, and librarians
- May from time-to-time administer collection development and planning, including the selection of materials (independently and in consultation with teaching faculty), the acceptance of gifts-in-kind in accordance with University policy
- Research and analyze information in archival and library collections; produce research materials and documentation; and develop new information resources to assist with the location and interpretation of collection materials
- Actively develop partnerships and affiliation agreements, and participates in consortial initiatives, to improve access to library collections and services
- Supervise librarians, including setting goals, monitoring progress, evaluating employee performance, coaching and supporting professional development, ensuring sound succession and business continuity plans are in place at all levels within each respective work unit
- Responsible for implementation of the AODA Accessible Information & Communication Standard and establishment of institutional priorities to remove barriers to access, including development of a reformatting service to support students with disabilities
- Working with the Assistant University Librarian, plan systems and infrastructure improvements to deliver digital content and services to faculty, students, staff and researchers
- Working with the Assistant University Librarian, develop innovative services including academic liaison and faculty collaboration, material selection and collection development, reference and circulation services, creative and adaptable facilities, outreach and programming, and web-page development and communication tools
- Working with the Assistant University Librarian, plan streamlined access services including print and e-resource acquisitions, licensing and e-reserves management, and cataloguing and processing
- In collaboration with the Director of IT Services and Systems Librarian, plan integration of OCAD U Library Systems with other University systems
- Working with the Assistant University Librarian, plan services, projects, and programs for digitization, preservation and conversion of the University’s library and archival collections and cultural resources, including development of an Institutional Repository for graduate theses and research outputs
- In consultation with Facilities Planning & Management, prepare needs assessments and other documents, as required, to inform space planning and programming for a new University Library
- Compile and submit statistics for the University Library to the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), the Association of Independent Colleges of Art & Design (AICAD), and other bodies
- Internal & External Representation_
- Serve on University Senate and the following standing committees, or assign librarian designees: Senate Academic Policy & Planning Committee; Senate Undergraduate Studies Committee; Senate Graduate Studies Committee; and Senate Continuing Studies Committee. Actively participates in the University Research Committee
- Serve as the University’s voting representative on the Ontario Council of University Libraries consortium including decisions related to the development and sustainability of Scholars Portal
- Serve as the University’s Copyright Officer, responsible for negotiation of copyright licenses, for communication of protocols, and for implementation of policy and procedures to ensure compliance
- Contribute to the art/design library profession through research, publication, consultation, and committee work
- Serve on working committees established by the President or VP Academic & Provost, as required
