Thunder Bay, Canada Ministry of the Solicitor General Full time

**ATTENTION: MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS**

Do you have an interest in death investigation, an inquiring mind and a special interest in public safety and the community? Are you committed to working together with Indigenous peoples and other diverse communities to support collaborative advancement of the death investigation system? If you enjoy using your communication, leadership and people skills within a multi-disciplinary, high-profile environment, consider this leadership role as Regional Supervising Coroner with the Office of the Chief Coroner, Ministry of the Solicitor General.

**About Us**:
Ontario's death investigation system is the largest in North America. It is responsible for investigating approximately 21,000 deaths in the province annually in accordance with the Coroners Act. Under the leadership of the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service, Ontario's coroners are physicians with specialized training in the principles of death investigation. We are required to provide high quality death investigations and inquests to ensure that no death will be overlooked, concealed or ignored. The investigative findings are used to generate recommendations to help improve public safety and prevent further deaths. The Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service work together to ensure a coordinated and collaborative approach to death investigation in the public interest.

**What a career in the Ontario Public Service (OPS) can offer you**:
The OPS is committed to be an employer of first choice, creating a positive and inclusive work environment. In addition to flexible work arrangements, a collegial and professional work culture, career growth and development and on-the-job training to help you succeed, we offer a competitive total compensation package that includes the following:

- Flexible work arrangements
- Defined benefit pension plan
- Maternal and parental leave top-up benefits, which are inclusive of adoptive parents
- Comprehensive health and dental plans
- Life and disability insurance

**OPS Commitment to Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility, and Anti-Racism**: The OPS is an innovative, responsive and accountable public service that works hard to be diverse, anti-racist, inclusive, merit-based, and equitable. Diversifying leadership is a top priority for the OPS. Our goal is to achieve parity with the Ontario labour force by 2025 for the most under-represented groups (Indigenous, racialized and persons with disabilities) on our leadership teams.

The OPS is an accessible employer and we offer accommodation in all aspects of employment, including the recruitment process. Visit the
**OPS Anti-Racism Policy **and the
**OPS Diversity and Inclusion Blueprint** pages to learn more about the OPS commitment to advancing racial equity, diversity and inclusion.

**What can I expect to do in this role?**: You will:

- Provide advice and leadership on a variety of matters and interactions pertaining to death investigation.
- Provide direction and supervision to coroners within the region, which will require some travel, including evaluating performance while also ensuring high-quality death investigations.
- Provide supervision of investigations and identify public safety issues and prevention strategies.
- Exercise quasi-judicial powers including potentially presiding over inquests.
- Build and maintain effective relationships and communications with forensic pathologists, families, police, Crown attorneys, other investigative agencies, lawyers, media, and the public.
- Represent the Office of the Chief Coroner on various ministry committees and advisory boards when requested. This includes regular engagement with Indigenous leadership and communities and visits to remote communities.

**How do I qualify?**:
**Mandatory**:

- A physician who is, or eligible to be, licensed and in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

**Specialized Expertise**:

- You have extensive experience in the practice of medicine and management experience with other health professionals.
