The Commission has a unique role within Nova Scotia. It is an independent government agency charged with administering the Human Rights Act. The Commission is mandated to help build inclusive communities and protect human rights in Nova Scotia.

**About Our Opportunity**:
Reporting to the CEO, the Director, Race Relations, Equity and Inclusion (the Director) leads a team of professionals in the development and delivery of policy, programs, research, and expert advice for race relations, equity and inclusion to address and prevent systemic discrimination and work towards creating a more inclusive society for all Nova Scotians.

The Director provides strategic leadership to empower communities through transformative education, leading a path forward where education is not just a means of acquiring knowledge, but a tool applied proactively to create transformational change. Through the Director’s leadership, the Commission’s goal is to galvanize this change by empowering communities to combat discrimination through education that is accessible, inclusive, and equitable.

**Primary Accountabilities**:

- Develops and nurtures key relationships with communities and partners including African Nova Scotian and L’nu communities and organizations. As a provincial authority on race relations, equity, and inclusion, the Director uses a deep and contextual understanding of Nova Scotia’s history and contemporary realities of equity-deserving communities to ensure the Commission is a relevant and valued service provider and partner. The Director stewards relationships with diverse communities across the province including persons with disabilities, immigrants/newcomers, faith communities, and the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Through education, consultation, and coaching, the Director supports Commission colleagues to provide culturally responsive service delivery.
- Oversees a program of research on a variety of human rights issues to ensure the Commission’s planning and decisions are based on current information and thorough analysis.
- Provides expert advice to the CEO, Dispute Resolution unit, government departments and other partners on the development of strategies and approaches for identifying and dismantling systemic and structural discrimination including through policy, education, and complaint/resolution processes.
- Leads a team of human rights professionals, overseeing the design, delivery and monitoring of learning opportunities for organizations and groups in the public, private, and community sectors on a wide range of human rights topics including race and racism, disability, accessibility, and accommodation, sexual harassment, etc.
- Ensures the effective management of human and financial resources by setting and evaluating staff performance targets, promoting diversity and a healthy workplace, demonstrating leadership competencies, respecting corporate human resources practices, promoting teamwork and individual development, maintaining internal communications, and monitoring expenditures while adhering to procurement guidelines.

**Qualifications and Experience**:

As the Director, you will have an undergraduate or graduate degree with extensive, progressively more responsible experience over several years working as a leader. You are a strategic thinker and a key contributor with strong skills as a leader of leaders, relationship builder, and coach, who inspires a culture of innovation and accountability. You have a proven track record of success working with key partners, communicating clear expectations, providing inspirational leadership, and driving culture change and transformation. You are committed to change management with a strong bias for open communication and collaboration with teams, partners, and stakeholders. You will leverage your strong collaboration skills to work effectively with public and private sector senior officials to build and cultivate innovative partnerships within and external to government. You thrive in a workplace that prioritizes cultural competency, trauma-informed practices, and restorative approaches.
