**About Us**:
The Correctional Services division of the Department of Justice is responsible for the administration and operation of community and custody-based programs and services for adults and young persons. Within the Correctional Services core business area there are two programs: community corrections & correctional facilities. Each of these program areas is broken down into closely related activities that have a specific impact on the program’s target group.

Community Corrections has 22 offices across the province from Yarmouth to Sydney and is responsible for the supervision of both adult and young persons serving community-based sentences. The sentences include probation, conditional sentence, custody and supervision, conditional supervision and Intensive Rehabilitative Custody and Supervision.

Four (4) adult correctional facilities and one (1) youth centre provide the safety and security of person in custody while providing programs that address dynamic criminogenic factors to assist with their successful, reintegration back into the community.

Nova Scotia Correctional Services utilizes an evidence-based approach in both Community Corrections and custodial facilities. Core Correctional Practices (CCP) is the foundational practice that drives reintegration and rehabilitation practices deployed within Correctional Services. Utilizing CCP, Correctional Services staff can effectively interact, manage behavior, and help facilitate change, within target populations.

**About Our Opportunity**:
Reporting to the Director, Correctional Services, the Manager, Training and Development provides training and development to support the operations of Correctional Services community services or custody units. Managing a team of 7 staff, the Manager develops a plan for employee training and ensures that practical, language-based or policy-based training programs are developed and offered to appropriate staff members which addresses diversity and inclusion.

The Manager assess the needs of the division and facilitates a wide variety of training programs that enhance the effectiveness of the workforce. The Manager conducts regular reviews/audits to encompass changes as a result of federal and provincial legislative review and analysis. The Manager is the division lead in the provision of Restorative Labour Practices.

**Primary Accountabilities**:
Some of the primary accountabilities in this role include:

- Develop, implement and monitor evidence-based or best practice training standards that meets the needs of staff to work safely and effectively with adults and youth in custody or under community supervision
- Effective management of human and financial resources by setting and evaluating staff performance targets, promoting diversity and a healthy workplace, demonstrating the leadership competencies, respecting corporate human resources practices, promoting teamwork and individual development. Assists with meeting financial targets within budget by ensuring the reduction of waste of resources, scheduling of staff and making recommendations to reduce costs by initiating new practices.
- Design training curriculum and implement and monitor training programs for staff.
- Plan and implement compliance audits, inspections and evaluations with relation to legislation, policies and procedures.
- Plan, schedule and manage projects; identifying, implementing and oversight of technical resources to improve processes, including contract development.
- Responsible to lead a team of Correctional Services staff who will provide Restorative Approaches to employee issues in a proactive and preventative manner within the workplace to build strong, positive relationships

**Qualifications and Experience**:
This may be the right opportunity for you if you have a University degree in a relevant/related field along with at least 5 years of facilitation experience in a classroom or group setting. An acceptable equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered. Familiarity with Correctional Services and knowledge of currently accepted correctional strategies and philosophies would be considered an asset. Some experience with MS Word, MS Power Point and other software programs is necessary.

The Manager must be able to act decisively and with sound judgement during routine matters or crisis situations.
