**Job Summary**

**Location: On-site, National Gallery of Canada, 380, Sussex Drive, Ottawa

Reporting to the VP, Public Affairs and Marketing, the Copyright Manager oversees the protection and licensing related to the reproduction of works of art. This includes ensuring compliance with copyright laws, negotiating licenses and addressing infringement issues.

This position is also key in implementing the NGC’s digital and accessibility strategies. The incumbent will be working in collaboration with other departments to ensure that the public, partner institutions, scholars and people with disabilities and/or who live outside of the National Capital Region can access the NGC’s collection and public programming online.

**Requirements**:

- CCC/CCC
- Proven leader with the ability to lead a team including recruiting, training and performance planning and review, in a unionized and hybrid work environment.
- Provide advice to senior management and staff on all copyright related issues including appropriate, achievable, and cost-effective solutions and strategies.
- Able to develop and implement an annual business plan; oversee the team’s operating budget including resource allocation and cost estimates and updates related to copyright uses and professional services for the NGC’s exhibitions and projects.
- Able to analyze financial information and to prepare statistical and narrative reports.
- This position requires advance planning skills given the complexity and volume of requests to be processed annually.
- Able to remain highly focused under pressure and be flexible with multiple shifting priorities.
- Well-developed problem-solving skills to resolve issues and/or to review workflow to meet short turnaround times sometimes with inflexible deadlines.
- Creative and innovative approaches to balance conflicting interests of stakeholders and/or to adapt to the realities of new technologies or formats used in promoting content to Canadians that are not under the purview of existing legislation or the Scale Agreement.
- Collaborate with other departments on developing and implementing the NGC’s digital strategy.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to identify new opportunities to generate licensing revenues.
- Command of the principles, theory, and precedents related to:

- the Canadian Copyright Act, the Status of the Artist Act, the Privacy Act and other associated legislations in Canada and abroad;
- the Scale Agreement and best copyright and rights & reproduction practices within the international art museums community;
- different formats of digital images and photographic materials and ability to use photographic software (eg. Photoshop) to crop and resize images as appropriate for intended use;
- art history, the NGC collection and the various databases used to retrieve requested information from internal or external stakeholders;
- Best practices related to information management for database/filing system procedures, implementation and upkeep; and
- Publishing/printing process to ensure timely, accurate and efficient client service regarding reproductions and licenses.
- The minimum level of knowledge is normally attained through completion of a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and 10 years of relevant experience in art institutions and/or cultural industries.

**Condition of Employment**
