**Job Summary**

**Location: On-site, National Gallery of Canada, 380, Sussex Drive, Ottawa

Reporting to the Copyright Manager, the Copyright Officer plays a role in the protection and licensing related to the reproduction and exhibition of works of art. This includes ensuring compliance with copyright laws, drafting contracts and licenses and raising infringement issues.

The incumbent will also contribute to the implementation of the Gallery’s digital and accessibility strategies to ensure that the public, partner institutions, scholars and people with disabilities and/or who live outside of the National Capital Region can access the NGC’s collection and public programming online.

**Requirements**:

- Developed problem-solving; able to synthesize information and present options to stakeholders.
- Knowledge of:

- the Canadian Copyright Act, Status of the Artist Act, the Privacy Act and other related legislations in Canada and abroad and the ability to interpret them;
- the ethics of art reproduction and the Gallery’s policy on Copyright, Exhibition Rights and the Scale Agreement;
- different formats of digital images and photographic materials and ability to use photographic software (eg. Photoshop) to crop and resize images as appropriate for intended use;
- art history, the NGC collection and the various databases used to retrieve requested

information from internal or external stakeholders;
- Multiple different software programs and databases; and
- Publishing/printing process to ensure timely, accurate and efficient client service regarding reproductions and licenses.
- The minimum level of required expertise is normally attained through completion of a Bachelor’s degree (or an equivalent program such as Applied Museum Studies) and 3 years of relevant experience in art institutions and/or cultural industries.
- Bilingualism (French and English) is an asset.

**Condition of Employment**
