**Department summary**

Canadian Underground Infrastructure Innovation Centre (CUIIC), a research center at the Faulty of Engineering, is a world class hub for innovation and research in underground infrastructure. With more than 50 organizations across the country as its members, CUIIC plays a major role in shaping future of underground infrastructure innovation.

The Faculty of Engineering at University of Alberta is home to large-scale, long-term collaborative research programs. The faculties vision is to be the most daring engineering community on the planet.

**Position summary**

Reporting to the Director of CUIIC, the Technical Writer plays a key role in the coordination and finalization of communication materials produced on behalf of the staff and students associated with the Centre.

**Duties**
- Assists in developing written and graphic communications material
- Researches and writes materials that raise awareness of and the profile of CUIIC among different groups (industry and academic audiences, as well as potential students) particularly using social media platforms (LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.)
- Assists Director in preparing annual reports for the University, NSERC or industrial partners
- Quickly assesses the writing style necessary for each project and effortlessly transitions from one style to another
- Works in a collaborative environment, involving consultation with the Director, other staff and graduate students to determine the guiding principles for each writing project
- Writes for and updates the CUIIC website
- Researches and contributes to articles and/or other content, writes speaker notes and other correspondence as required by the Director
- Produces clear, concise and accurate material for different audiences in various online and printed forms: this includes, but is not limited to, technical reports, PowerPoint presentations, and website content
- Assists with editing and proofreading theses written by graduate students
- High-level editing and formatting for academic journal and conference submissions
- Communicates with printers and publishers
- Liaises with other communications personnel within the Department, Faculty, and University, as well as industrial partners and external stakeholders
- Organizes CUIIC related meetings and workshops
- May include writing instruction, tutorial, and independent research as necessary

**Minimum Qualifications**
- A diploma or certificate (or equivalent combination of education and experience) in business communications, public relations, journalism, or a related discipline.
- Advanced knowledge with MS Office products is required

**Preferred Qualifications**
- The ideal applicant will possess one or more years of experience in communication, a strong commitment to working with graduate students and a professional, poised and positive approach.
- Familiarity with Adobe InDesign and Illustrator would be an asset.
- Familiarity with the University of Alberta and the engineering profession would also be assets.
