**Ministerial Correspondence Unit (MCU)**

Our Ministerial Correspondence Unit (MCU) provides vital support to the Minister, Deputy Minister, and across the department in communicating the Government of Alberta’s strategies, policies, and programs. The Writer/Editor will work closely with the MCU team to ensure the Minister and Deputy Minister are provided with the highest quality of information and correspondence materials in a responsive and timely manner.

**Role Responsibilities**:
The Writer/Editor works closely with the Manager of the Ministerial Correspondence Unit (MCU) to provide an efficient and effective flow of accurate, timely, and responsive ministerial correspondence and briefings in the support of Advanced Education’s Business plan and mandate.

The Writer/Editor is responsible for drafting and editing responses to correspondence and for editing briefings for the Premier, Minister, government MLAs, and the Deputy Minister. The incumbent prepares responses in consultation with department staff and assists them in responding to action requests (ARs). The Writer/Editor works within the policies and processes set out by the ministry to complete ARs within timelines by ensuring workload is prioritized appropriately and maintains awareness of current issues to assist the MCU in responding appropriately to emerging trends. In conjunction with the MCU Manager, the incumbent is responsible for maintaining the Ministerial Style Guide.

As Writer/Editor, you will be responsible for the following key activities in the branch:
**1. Ensure documents are accurate, consistent with ministry standards, and completed within timelines.**
- Review, edit, and draft ministerial and Deputy Minister correspondence and briefings, consulting with professional and technical staff as needed.
- Creatively convey information in a way that is sensitive to the Minister’s needs, the department’s positions and political situations.
- Conduct independent research to ensure accuracy, including the review and analysis of government and stakeholder reports, business plans, websites and other documents.
- Ensure responses are clear and can be easily understood by the reader. Ensure consistency in the messages.
- Ensure the ministry’s position and appropriate programs, policies, and procedures are accurately reflected.
- Ensure the effective and timely coordination of cross-division responses through consultation and mediation among program areas.
- Coordinate cross-ministry responses to ARs through consultation and mediation with other government departments.
- Balance competing priorities, ensuring the timely completion of multiple ARs on a daily basis.

**2. Provide high-quality MCU-Drafted AR Reponses.**
- Compose correspondence for the Minister and Deputy, ensuring correct and current information is conveyed with the appropriate style, tone and sensitivity.
- Ensure the ministry’s position, programs and policies are accurately reflected in responses by keeping abreast of issues and initiatives.
- Ensure drafts for standard responses are current and accurate.
- Stay abreast of issues and anticipate ministerial concerns and needs with regard to stakeholder relations.
- Organize and track assignments to completion, prioritizing appropriately.

- Provide cover-off in the Manager’s absence.
- Assist with new AR assignments.
- Provide cover-off in the ARTS Administrator’s absence.
- Identify current and emerging issues and trends arising from ARs and provide information and advice to the MCU Manager and others as required.
