McMaster University Library is seeking a knowledgeable and collaborative librarian to join the Distinctive Collections Division.

The Digitization Services Librarian will be responsible for the direction of the University Library’s digitization program. In collaboration with the AUL for Distinctive Collections and others, they set standards and expectations for the University Library’s digitized content and metadata and ensure those expectations are met. The incumbent will work collaboratively across the Library, including with the William Ready Division of Archives and Research Collections and the Lloyd Reeds Map Collection, on selection and prioritization of materials for digitization. They will further the Library’s efforts for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by ensuring these considerations are woven through our digitization program and decision making. The incumbent will manage the University Library’s Digitization Centre, including the hiring, support, and development of Digitization Centre staff and student assistants, and will direct the flow of work through the Centre from the initial identification of materials for digitization to the deposit of digital objects and metadata in preservation repositories.
- Collaborate with others in the library on the selection of materials for digitization. Develop and support methods of gathering suggestions for digitization targets from the McMaster community that support research and teaching as well as from communities beyond McMaster. With the AUL, identify opportunities for digitization of McMaster-held materials that contribute to larger shared repositories. Work collaboratively to prioritize digitization requests.
- Work collaboratively across the library to provide digitized resources that support a range of needs and uses, including activities such as teaching, exhibits and community outreach, digital scholarship and computational research methods, contribution to shared repositories or projects, and others. Adapt workflows and processes to achieve agreed outcomes.
- Direct the end-to-end workflow for digitization of physical library collections in various formats, from identification of materials for digitization to deposit of completed digital objects and metadata in preservation repositories. Guide the movement of physical collections through the Digitization Centre. Coordinate the contribution of digitized content to shared repositories (e.g., HathiTrust, Canadiana, etc.).
- Hire, support, supervise, and develop Digitization Centre staff and student assistants.
- Review completed work as needed to ensure that expected digital object formats are created and that expected standards and best practices are met. Work collaboratively with Digitization Centre staff and others in the library to adjust procedures or workflows where necessary to achieve expected outcomes. Ensure that appropriate descriptive, technical, and administrative metadata is created or captured for each digital object.
- Ensure that principles of accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion are incorporated into the digitization process in order to build accessible digitized collections that include diverse voices and perspectives. Work closely with Library Accessibility Services in the provision of materials in alternative formats and broader accessibility considerations.
- Review materials identified for digitization and advise on copyright considerations, workflow, timeline for processing, and challenges or concerns with identified materials to guide prioritization and process decisions. Work collaboratively with the Digital Repository Librarian, Digital Archives Librarian, Digital Experience team, and others in the Library to coordinate appropriate storage, management, preservation, discovery, and access for newly created digital objects.
- Identify and recommend to the AUL new or additional equipment or vendor services needed to achieve the Library’s objectives for the digitization program. Manage vendor-provided digitization services, both onsite (e.g., Internet Archive) and offsite (e.g., for audiovisual materials). Coordinate the transfer of materials to and from vendors for digitization. Ensure that digital objects received conform to expected quality and format standards, have appropriate metadata, and are deposited in appropriate preservation repositories.

This is a full time, continuing appointment reporting to the Associate University Librarian, Distinctive Collections. Normally scheduled weekly hours will be Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm (35 hours/week).
