Future Science Leaders (FSL) is Science World’s flagship youth science and leadership program. In this program, students are part of a powerful peer network made up of some of BC’s most talented students. Students meet and learn from BC’s top science, technology and business leaders and are supported by a talented team of staff and university fellows.
The Year 2 program is composed of a life science and applied science stream who are mentored through skill building activities and guided projects. Both streams culminate in a 12-week student directed project. The Year 3 program is currently being developed into an internship bashed experience that places our graduates at local STEM organizations.
**Role Description**:
In this role, you will drive the development, implementation, documentation and evaluation of Science World’s Future Science Leaders Year 2 programs. You will work closely with the Program Manager and Experiential Learning Specialist Year 1 as well as the Year 2 Program Facilitators, to carry out a successful FSL program. From planning sessions, preparing session resources, managing online learning platforms, facilitating weekly sessions in either the applied science or life science stream, and communicating with students and parents, you will ensure the Year 2 program is a success. In addition, you will assist the Program Manager with our year 3 internship program.
This is a full-time role (40 hours per week), of which Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 4pm to 9pm are mandatory. Other hours are flexible.
**Key Responsibilities**:
**Program Delivery**
- Deliver the life science program alongside a facilitator. Plan lessons, review student work, and mentor students on projects
- Support the delivery of the applied science program by the facilitators by maintaining program consistency, attending sessions, and meeting with facilitators.
- Assist with development, coordination, and implementation of the Year 3 program
- Act as eSTEAMed journal editor for all submitted student papers. Coordinate the submission and review process. Organize the publication and electronic distribution of the journal
- Assist with the organization of FSL events
**Program Coordination Administration, Documentation, and Promotion**
- Assist with development and implementation of student recruitment strategies
- Secure and organize lesson and project supplies needed for Year 2 program
- Act as main point of contact for students and parents
- Oversee team of facilitators including participating in hiring and approving work hours
- Attend and engage in the Experiential Learning departmental meetings, as well as weekly meetings with the Program Manager
- Maintain the Launch Pad lab space, ensuring cleanliness and organization
- Provide students with reference letters upon request
- Perform other related duties as required to fulfill any changing business needs of this role
**Qualifications**:
- A post-secondary degree in STEM with research and leadership experience in a life science field. Graduate level credentials preferred
- Experience with teaching and/or developing youth programming
- Experience and passion developing STEM/STEAM communications
- Must be comfortable presenting to a variety of audiences, specifically teens
- Must be willing to work regularly on weekday evenings and occasionally on weekends
- Must be willing and able to travel on occasion as mutually agreed upon
- Ability to work with attention to detail, with firm deadlines and to manage multiple projects
- Passion for connecting STEM/STEAM professionals with youth
- Possess a valid regular class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Must be physically able to safely lift at least 12kgs
