Regional Environmental Public Health Consultant

**Job Description**:
In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
Reporting to the Regional Manager or designate within Island Health and working as part of a interdisciplinary team, the Regional Environmental Public Health Consultant performs a variety of duties related to the promotion and enforcement of public health standards and regulations related to reducing the incidence of communicable disease, chronic disease, injury, and health hazards, while also supporting the health and social wellbeing of the public. Responsibilities include advising Environmental Health Officers, community stakeholders and partners on matters relating to a variety of Environmental Public Health issues, including food protection, pools and recreational water, housing and general sanitation, injury prevention, communicable diseases, drinking water, land use, community planning and design, on-site and community sewerage treatment, waste management, air quality, and housing.
The Consultant position works across the Public Health department in a variety of areas based on priority needs including food protection, pools and recreational water, housing and general sanitation, injury prevention, communicable diseases, drinking water, land use, community planning and design, on-site and community sewerage treatment, waste management, air quality, and housing.
Travel may be a requirement of this position and transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of Island Health.
**QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education, Training And Experience**:
- Board of Certification, Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors.
- Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada).
- Knowledge of modern methods, principles, techniques and practices of Environmental Public Health practices including food protection, pools and recreational water, housing and general sanitation, injury prevention, communicable diseases, drinking water, land use, community planning and design, on-site and community sewerage treatment, waste management, air quality, and housing.
- Knowledge of provincial legislation and local bylaws pertaining to Environmental Public Health.
- Valid BC Driver's Licence.
- Three (3) years of recent related experience.
- An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
**Skills And Abilities**:
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement, decision-making and problem solving.
- Ability to work independently, organize workload and establish priorities.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of research methodology and analysis. Ability to secure facts through investigation, inspection and surveys.
- Ability to develop policy and recommend changes and revisions in programs, bylaws and regulations and write comprehensive reports.
- Ability to interpret Acts, Regulations, Bylaws, and other relevant policies and legislation.
- Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships with management, colleagues, government agencies, clients and the public.
- Ability to speak in public, make presentations and address community groups.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
