**Job Summary**:
Reporting to the Director of Strategic Initiatives & Government Relations, the Manager of Government Relations is a strategic leader responsible for providing expert advice and driving engagement with government, community stakeholders and Federal and Provincial Associations to advance the Region’s priorities. The Manager will support the Region’s Senior Management Team and Regional Council in the development and implementation of advocacy strategies that promote the Region’s interests. The Manager will also support the advancement of Truth and Reconciliation with Indigenous Nations, People and Communities.

**Duties & Responsibilities**:

- Develop and coordinate a Regional Advocacy Strategy, plans, projects, policy positions and briefing material in relation to intergovernmental relations and Federal / Provincial legislation
- Monitor and analyze government legislation, intergovernmental policies and trends that could impact the Region and provide advice
- Support strategic public engagement and identify opportunities to advance the Region’s goals through effective advocacy
- Provide leadership and manage professional staff towards organizational and individual objectives
- Lead projects by resolving issues and problems; conducting comparative analysis; preparing advocacy positions; identifying implications and preparing recommendations
- Author council and committee reports on intergovernmental issues, advance key funding agreements between the Region, provincial and federal governments
- Participate on committees, working groups and other bodies to address the Region’s priorities
- Consult/liaise with other governments and stakeholders on advocacy initiatives and Regional priorities
- Build and maintain strong relationships to support Regional Council
- Work with elected officials to participate in nongovernmental organizations like the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO)
- Provide oversight to the Region’s Indigenous Relations Team and supports in strengthen relationships with the Indigenous communities and advance the Region’s efforts toward Truth and Reconciliation
- Champion Indigenous Relations and offer strategic advice and recommendations to senior leadership and community advisory tables on strategies and implementation approaches with respect to Indigenous Relationships and Truth and Reconciliation
- Prepare reports, plans, policies, briefing notes, research papers, presentations, educational materials and communications
- Participate in corporate and external committees representing the interests of the department and Halton Region
- Develop and continually expand and enhance a broad network of contacts and resources both within and outside of the corporation

**Skills & Qualifications**:
**Essential**:

- University degree in public administration, political science or a related discipline
- Minimum of ten years’ progressive experience in government relations
- Minimum of three years’ leadership experience, coaching and mentoring a team
- Extensive and demonstrated political acuity and understanding of regional government operations and its relationships with government partners, including Local Municipalities and Regions, the Province and Federal Governments, at both the staff and political levels
- Excellent project management skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary and team environment
- Experience in the development of complex public engagement activities
- Excellent verbal, written interpersonal and presentation skills
- Work independently and handle multi-faceted conflicting priorities
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite
- Solid judgement, problem-solving skills
- Tact, diplomacy and political acuity

**Preferred**:

- Good understanding of data analytics
