**Who We Are**

The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is an advocacy organization, taking direction and fulfilling mandates as directed by First Nations in-Assembly through resolutions. As a national advocacy organization for First Nations, the AFN seeks to advance First Nations Inherent and Treaty Rights through the development policy, public education and where applicable, the co-development of legislation to build First Nations capacity.

**The Role**

The incumbent will also be responsible for the achievement of defined work plans and objectives aimed at supporting and advancing AFN’s national advocacy positions, interests and strategies in First Nations water related issues and priorities.

Reporting to the Director, Water, the Policy Analyst has the following key duties and responsibilities:
**Responsibilities**:

- Conduct comprehensive research on First Nations Water Stewardship policies, development and best practice.
- Develop policy proposals and recommendations based on research findings and partner consultations.
- Evaluate existing policies and regulations to identify gaps, inefficiencies, and areas for improvement.
- Collaborate with partners, including government agencies, educational institutions and First Nations to gather input and ensure policy coherence.
- Prepare clear and concise reports, policy briefs, and presentations summarizing research findings and policy recommendations.
- Present research outcomes and policy proposals to internal and external partners, including government officials, educational institutions, and First Nations Communities
- Respond to inquiries and provide expert advice on Water policy-related matters.
- Stay informed about the latest developments in water stewardship.
- Participate in the various working groups and support the group with organizing and coordinating AFN’s participation in meetings.

**Qualifications**:

- An undergraduate degree in political, technical or social sciences, environment, humanities, public policy, or a related field of study with 3-5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in specific policy area;
- 3-5 years of experience working with First Nations, and related policies, preferably pertaining to water, environment and climate change.
- Knowledge and understanding of the issues in First Nations communities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to translate complex ideas and information to any audience;
- Demonstrated ability to research and statistical related terminology;
- Demonstrated experience analyzing large sets of complex and changing data, and communicating it in a clear and concise way, ensuring colleagues across the organization, committees, First Nations leadership and partners understand findings and recognize significance;
- Demonstrated experience working with First Nations, federal, provincial, territorial, and international governments and officials;
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills, teamwork and judgement;
- Demonstrated time management, planning & organizational skills and attention to detail; and
- English is the working language although the ability to communicate effectively in French or any Indigenous language would also be an asset.
