**Purpose**: The objective of this role is to reinforce the mission and ministries of Hillhurst United Church by advancing and enriching our youth programs. The role calls for providing leadership and growth to these initiatives, generating an inclusive, lively, and stimulating community that appeals to a wide range of children and youth from our church and beyond. The goal is to form a supportive community that inspires exploration of faith and resonates with Hillhurst's fundamental values of social justice, radical hospitality, spirituality, and risk-taking.

**Employment Status**:Up to 10 hours per week, part-time staff position.

**Position Reports to**:Executive Director and supervised by NextGen Ministries Coordinator

**Normal Weekly Schedule**:
The Youth Ministries Lead must be present for Sunday services, events, and activities. In addition, the lead will be present for all youth evening activities. The lead will use weekday time for planning, preparing, executing, and evaluating programs and services. Any working hours above 10 hrs must be approved in advance by the supervisor.

**General Accountability**:
The Youth Ministry Lead will provide weekly programs for youth, grades 7 to grade 12. The position will be responsible for recruiting, building, and maintaining a strong program that includes discussion, faith formation, radical hospitality, social justice, and community building for youth. The lead will work with the other volunteers and staff to develop a programmatic calendar, events, and weekly gatherings. In addition, the lead will also provide youth lessons on Sunday mornings.

**Basic Requirements**:

- Collaborates with the NextGen Ministries Coordinator for Sunday morning youth lessons.
- Plan activities for Hillhurst United Church youth group.
- Be present and visible at worship and church activities, especially those involving members of the Youth Group, including Sunday mornings and planned activities
- Prepare and lead multiple activities at times agreed upon by the youth group, and in consultation with the NextGen Ministries coordinator
- Mentor youth as volunteers
- Gain the confidence and trust of youth (members and non-members) and their families
- Create a friendly and open atmosphere that will be attractive to youth
- Plan for, promote and participate with youth in events and other activities that provide for spiritual discoveries and growth, and provide opportunities for community service
- Actively involve and promote youth roles in program and church leadership
- Take advantage of opportunities for personal and professional growth and learning
- Work in team with the staff and key leaders at Hillhurst United Church
- Oversee paid or volunteer Youth Support Staff when applicable
- Engage with regional youth events through the Regional Youth Council, and seek partnership with other youth groups
- Prepare and lead (with youth) 1 worship service a year

**Administrative Requirements**
- Submit detailed time sheets monthly to the bookkeeper
- Seek counsel from the NextGen Ministries coordinator in monthly planning and ongoing check ins
- Prepare a report of the youth program for the annual general meeting as requested
- Meet regularly with the Youth Leader Support and and Children & Youth Ministry Coordinator for planning and prep time ( 2 - 3 hours per month)
- Attend planning meetings, Staff meetings when possible and semi-annual Staff retreats as requested
- Youth Leader will connect with NextGen Ministries coordinator about pastoral care issues arising from Youth Group youth/families
- Prepare a yearly budget and submit to the Executive director by October 1st each year

**Skills and Attributes to be demonstrated in performance of duties**:

- Demonstrated experience working within a church or religious environment.
- Experience creating, implementing, and evaluating successful youth programming.
- Possess a passion for children and youth ministry.
- Knowledge of how to work within a vulnerable sector with children and youth, and confident in proactively implementing practices that keep children and adults safe.
- Ability to attract youth from congregation and community to build a supportive, nurturing, and fun environment.
- Familiarity and comfort with the United Church’s theology.
- Ability to relate theological ideas and spirituality to youth.
- Strong interpersonal, problem solving and organizational skills.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Demonstrated ability to bring a high level of self-motivation and passion to a growing environment.
- Strong sense of teamwork.
- Must be able to work independently.
- Experience managing budgets, project goals and other resources to ensure program success.
