Position Overview:
The Supervisor, Operations (Turf) supervises work related to planning, coordination, direction and supervision of the work duties related to turf maintenance in city parks, facilities and boulevards and Hydro Corridors. The successful incumbent will also participate as a member of the supervisory team for the winter control maintenance program.
- Responsibilities:
- Responsible for interviewing and selection of staff, orientation and training, direction and guidance, and performance management.
- Plans annual and seasonal work programs (e.g. turf mowing and rehabilitation, turf repairs) by identifying resource requirements such as labour, materials, supplies and equipment.
- Plans and supervises the maintenance of all turf inventory and other related ground maintenance clearing or clean up responsibilities for the City through surface and surrounding landscape maintenance. Plans and supervises the Fall leaf program for all city parks and facilities. Oversees and monitors regular unit activities including reviewing and authorizing time and pay records, tracking expenditures, monitoring relevant budgets, and ensuring accurate reporting to CityWorks as required for activities that are planned daily or weekly.
- Applies technical knowledge related to turfgrass science to support maintenance and operation of turf inventory in city parks, facilities and boulevards.
- Inspects for unsafe conditions, required maintenance and repairs of passive turf inventory in city parks, facilities and boulevards.
- Develops and maintains turf inventory and routing through ongoing communication with GIS staff.
- Ensures proper use of turf-related fleet equipment (including upholding the anti-idling policy, pre-trip vehicle inspections, equipment sharing, house of service recording, identification of maintenance needs, and accident prevention.)
- Inspects and approves for maintenance by the City, new turfed areas in subdivisions such as boulevards, cul de sacs, Hydro Corridors and parks.
- Supervises staff and resources responsible for the salting, sanding, and plowing of City sidewalks, trail segments and Bike lanes.
- Oversees all operational requirements of the City’s neighbourhood rink program including set up, repairs and inspections.
- Oversees Kitchener’s Winter Toboggan Hill program. Including set up, repairs & inspections.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

**Requirements**:
- Minimum 3-year degree or diploma in a related field.
- Minimum 2 years relevant experience.
- Valid MTO G class driver's license in good standing.
- Advanced knowledge of turfgrass management and IPM (integrated pest management).
- Ability to interpret Ministry of Environment legislation related to pesticides, ground water usage/contamination.
- Understanding of specialized equipment such as slope mowers, flail mowers and over seeders, agricultural tractors with various turf maintenance implements.
- Knowledge of planning and overseeing Parks winter maintenance programs including routes, scheduling and weather monitoring. Ability to determine the appropriate action to take in accordance with legislated requirements and provincial maintenance standards.
- Provide support and expertise if required for Freedom of discoveries on behalf of Kitchener’s operational programs.
- Support preparation of annual budget review and projections.
- Manage resources and deliver projects on budget and on time.
- Must be reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
