**About Us**
As part of an alliance agreement Aecon Nuclear has been awarded a contract with Ontario Power Generation to support the Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP). Beginning in 2023 Aecon will support the validation phase design, procurement, early site preparation and site mobilization scope for the Construction of the Unit 1 Small Modular Reactor at the Darlington site.
The Environmental Specialist will be responsible for assisting in preparing guidance documents to safeguard water, air, and land quality and ensure the protection of wildlife and wildlife habitat during all construction activities. The Environmental Specialist will work closely with the operations teams tasked to install environmental controls and mitigation measures for construction activities.
**What is the Opportunity?**
- Experience conducting Environmental Site Assessments.
- Comprehensive understanding of industry standard environmental site assessment practices and processes.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced working environment.
- Work with operations team to develop environmental work plans for various scopes of work.
- Implement control measures to mitigate the impact to environmental values resulting from construction activities.
- Track environmental performance including water quality, air quality, terrestrial impacts on biodiversity and wildlife observations.
- Maintain a full understanding of the environmental requirements, including necessary permits and authorizations, Best Management Practices, and the requirements of the Environmental Management Plan and Environmental Work Plans. Work with operations management and staff to ensure compliance with these plans.
- Perform daily monitoring of construction works including, but not limited to the following:
- Terrestrial environment inspections and management.
- Species at Risk and SAR habitat inspections and management.
- Aquatic species inspections and management.
- Fish and wildlife habitat management.
- Preparing daily monitoring reports.
- Other duties performed during construction works include, but not limited to the following:
- Checking functionality of erosion and sediment control measures.
- Checking spill kits and spill trays and providing guidance on spill cleanup activities.
- Ensuring site is kept organized and clean.
- Inspecting waste management.
- Review environmental audit reports prepared by the consultants and submit to the owner for review.
**What You Bring to the Table**:
- Post-Secondary education in Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering or Diploma in Environmental Technology.
- 2-5 years of experience in the delivery/management of an environmental compliance program.
- Valid G Driver License.
- Experience in the construction industry will be an asset.
- Experience in developing, implementing, monitoring, and tracking environmental practices and performance.
