**GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB**:
The Environmental Specialist identifies, assesses, and resolves problems concerning the environment. Ensures compliance with all environmental regulations and keeps abreast of any changes to laws and regulations that impact the organization. Serves as a contact with all regulatory bodies. Implements and maintains company policies adhering to environmental regulations.

**ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Prepares, schedules, and completes audits on manufacturing waste, facility, production processes, and office space as required.
- Creates and/or modifies procedures and policies as internal and/or external standards change.
- Creates reports on findings such as, but not limited to, emission report, National Pollution Inventory Report (NPRI), city or provincial regulations on air, water, land, and packaging annual reports.
- Ensures findings are posted as necessary. Reports discrepancies and works with process owners to implement corrective actions.
- Oversees reporting programs and software to record and track environmental data.
- Leads the collection of data, ensures all information is being captured accurately.
- Participates in review of incident and root causes of spill or release. When necessary, facilitates committee meetings.
- Oversees resulting corrective actions. Follows-up with all employees to ensure actions are completed.
- Reviews equipment and facility changes to ensure adhere to all environmental regulations and business initiatives.
- Completes research and analysis and works with all levels of the organization and regulatory bodies to ensure procedures are developed, trained, and implemented.
- Consults with customers and employees on biological and chemical effects of products. Represents the organization at regulatory development meetings.
- Conducts/facilitates testing levels of pollutant in air, land, and water. Performs qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments to identify hazards and recommends ways to protect employees through engineering controls.
- Leads and/or supports projects related to process improvements and change initiatives in area(s) of focus.
- Follows safe work procedures, policies, and practices, recognizes and reports hazards, attends health and safety meetings, and complies with legal regulations and obligations.
- Participates in training, audits, and inspections.
- Trains employees on environmental hazards, program procedures and standards.
- Performs multiple activities which require interaction with coworkers in other departments or divisions and requires awareness of related activities often because of committee reviews, regulatory changes, continuous improvement, and standards changes (ISO 14001).
- Advises senior management on changing regulations, new programs and potential non-compliance issues as early as possible.
- Participates in incident investigations and audits, provides training and advisory support, develop new procedures as required.
- Leverages clearly defined policies, principles, and specific objectives to address daily issues such as federal, provincial, and local regulations, company policy or standards, standard organizations (ISO, Air Waste management Association (AWMA), etc.), Material Safety Data Sheets or Product /Equipment Manuals, Environmental Scientific, Perrys (engineering manual) textbooks, or CRD (Chemical Rubber Company) manual and escalates issues as appropriate.

**EDUCATION**:

- Bachelor's or undergraduate degree from four or 5-year college or university

**EXPERIENCE**:

- Minimum 3 years of direct experience in an applicable or related industrial or manufacturing environment.
- Experience with documenting control procedures, following lean manufacturing management systems, and performing calculations.

**CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS**:

- Environmental professional development certification preferred.

**OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES**:

- Understanding that EHS employees are liable under the Criminal Code of Canada as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act to take every reasonable precaution in the circumstances for the protection of workers.
- Knowledge of environmental regulations, lean management, chemicals and chemical manufacturing, and human biology.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Advanced proficiency with MS-Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Power Point.
