**System Navigator; New Directions Program**

Temporary, 37.5hrs per week until March 31st 2025 (includes benefits) Start: June 1st, 2024 Ability to work flexible hours including evening and weekends

The New Directions Program is a unique, gender-responsive program for female youth between the ages of 12-24 who are vulnerable, marginalized, in unhealthy relationships, exhibit negative behaviours and/or are at risk of gang involvement. The New Directions System Navigator will provide support to the New Directions Caseworkers and organizations to help improve system navigation, promote, facilitate, and support inter-agency case conferences while addressing systemic barriers for the resolution of individual cases, to support system change and promote shared accountability. The System Navigator should be knowledgeable of the issues surrounding female youth and their involvement and engagement in gang activity, the three main objectives of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) including the prevention of youth crime, the use of meaningful consequences, and rehabilitation and reintegration through a relational supportive approach to facilitate the intervention process. The System Navigator also acts as an advocate with emphasis placed on developing resources and connections to community supports, to foster connections with other service providers to find solutions to unmet basic needs.

**Areas of Responsibility**:

- Builds positive, respectful, and non-judgmental relationships with female youth and their support systems
- Provides one-on-one client support, case management and counselling in order to establish and provides the necessary continuum of support to allow the youth to set achievable and realistic goals in a supportive mentoring relationship

- Acts as an advocate and educator with parents, schools, employers and other community organizations to facilitate the prevention/intervention process
- Responsible for providing guidance regarding problem-solving while encouraging the development and enhancement of skills and techniques required for successful intervention
- Records and evaluates each young person’s development on an ongoing basis and maintains case notes for all contacts with clients and support systems
- Provides informal supervision and support for practicum students and Agency volunteer to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of program services to clients
- Coordinates and monitors training and orientation of new and existing staff
- Meets with staff on a regular basis to discuss procedures, programs, community resources, and case management strategies
- Create and maintain evaluation tools to meet required data collection
- Complete required reporting activities for Manager and Managing Director to review
- Maintains positive relationships and interacts with various segments of the community
- Membership and participation in a variety of committees and task forces
- Keeps abreast of trends, community resources and developments in the youth care profession by participating in workshops, conferences, and continued professional development
- Assess, evaluate and ensure program needs and targets are met without exceeding budgetary constraints and considering resource availability
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Manager or designate
- A degree and/or diploma from a University or College in a related field with experience working with vulnerable populations; prior experience working with female at-risk youth, or those who have experienced gender-based violence is considered an asset
- Knowledge on the issues surrounding female youth and their involvement and engagement in gang activity
- The ability to maintain and encourage confident assessment and counselling skills in order to engage, support, and interact with clients using a trauma-informed approach
- Knowledge of community resources and services including, but not limited to, provision and access to food and clothing; accessing shelters or other appropriate housing options; access to health care (i.e. STDs, pregnancy, addiction, etc.); referrals to various counselling and victim services; access to financial supports, education; and employment supports
- Practical knowledge and experience administering gender specific and responsive programming
- Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills with the ability to work well and collaborate with diverse community groups and other stakehold
